I‘m not sure why I didn‘t fall in love with it. Interesting characters, during an interesting time but I just never connected. It‘s well written. To be fair maybe it‘s all the uncertainty right now that messed it up.

Redwritinghood Well, I read it earlier this year and felt the same, so maybe it‘s just the book. 5y

If you all haven‘t been watching the @WilliamMorrowBooks Facebook live videos of the books they are excited about you need to start! Not only are they funny but your TBR wishlist will explode. And you can win books (I won this month‘s books!). Any of these especially good? And yes, my dog is totally judging me 😆

BookDragonNotWorm I just got the worst/funniest image of news coverage of all the readers seriously injured by their TBR lists exploding! I feel like mine could already bury me alive! 😂 5y
candc320 @BookDragonNotWorm that is too funny 😂!! Yeah my piles are getting pretty ridiculous...when I opened the package with these books my husband looked shocked and blurted “are you serious? More books?!”. I just innocently told him “well I didn‘t BUY them so....🤷🏼‍♀️” 5y

Really enjoyed this. It was all about the well-drawn, complex characters for me, and I liked the shifting perspectives (though was left wanting more time with every narrator because each was so interesting). Also reminded that Chinese history is a blindspot for me. I‘m inspired to read some nonfiction about it now (recs, anyone?). Pictured with my desktop screensaver, because I couldn‘t stop thinking about how much this cover resembles it. ❤️💖💜

Christine Thanks for the ARC, #librarything #earlyreviewers ! 5y
Megabooks I enjoyed this memoir of the author working for Madame Mao‘s theater company. 5y
Christine @Megabooks Ooh, that sounds amazing - stacked! Thank you! (edited) 5y
Hooked_on_books I love your picture! 😍 I have this on hold from the library on audio. I‘m looking forward to it. 5y
Christine @Hooked_on_books I switched to the audio for a couple of chapters and really loved the narrators‘ performances - hope you do too! 5y

This was an ambitious debut. Well executed, but definitely read like a first novel. I liked it a lot, ultimately. I liked how it played with time. I love it when the linear western time is challenged - and mixed in with that is the theme of displacement and immigration. The untethered life of a daughter whose mother has erased her own past. Really solid read.
