The Power Worshippers
The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism | Katherine Stewart
23 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
For readers of Democracy in Chains and Dark Money, a revelatory investigation of the Religious Right's rise to political power. For too long the Religious Right has masqueraded as a social movement preoccupied with a number of cultural issues, such as abortion and same-sex marriage. But in her deeply reported investigation, Katherine Stewart reveals a disturbing truth: America's Religious Right has evolved into a Christian nationalist movement. It seeks to gain political power and to impose its vision on all of society. It isn't fighting a culture war, it is waging a political war on the norms and institutions of American democracy. Stewart shows that the real power of the movement lies in a dense network of think tanks, advocacy groups, and pastoral organizations, embedded in a rapidly expanding community of international alliances with likeminded, anti-democratic religious nationalists around the world, including Russia. She follows the money behind the movement and traces much of it to a group of super-wealthy, ultraconservative donors and family foundations. The Christian nationalist movement is far more organized and better funded than most people realize. It seeks to control all aspects of government and society. Its successes have been stunning, and its influence now extends to every aspect of American life, from the White House to state capitols, from our schools to our hospitals. The Power Worshippers is a brilliantly reported book of warning and a wake-up call. Stewart's probing examination demands that Christian nationalism be taken seriously as a significant threat to the American republic and our democratic freedoms.

My husband and I just watched these documentaries. They are about Christian Nationalism, and the Republican Party‘s goal to turn America into a theocracy. I read Stewart‘s book and it was infuriating. When watching these tonight, I realized that the 7 Mountains Mandate is the same thing as Project 2025. I grew up within a fundamentalist household and had to educate myself about the dark side of what that meant. Now, I am atheist. We barely⬇️

JenniferEgnor have a separation of church and state. It is crumbling in real time. Jerry Falwell and Paul Weyrich‘s visions are becoming a reality. This is something to fear but also to fight. We are not the minority, they are. We will not go into a fascist totalitarian rule quietly. In the name of humanity and all that is good, refuse fascism, fight back. These documentaries are on Tubi for free, watch them. 4mo

This book was interesting but slow in the middle. I wish the author had spent more time exploring the growing role of Russia in the Christian Nationalist movement, and particularly how the USA Christian Nationalist are using Russia as a model for what they want here. I found the history of the movement to be sad but interesting, with the intersection of racist and sexist beliefs leading to the fight against abortion.
3/5 stars, important read

It took me a while to get through this book because been so busy lately. But it was also hard to stomach. Every page, more infuriating. We are starting to hear about CN more in the news now, but it‘s not loud enough, it isn‘t being treated as dangerous. Freedom of religion also includes the right to be free from religion. Think of what‘s normalized now—naming opposite political parties as ‘demons‘ (literally!), the killing of queer folx, the

JenniferEgnor attacks (literally) on books, libraries, librarians, public education, medical providers, marriage equality, BIPOC, anti-semitism, the rejection of science. The real meaning of ‘Religious freedom/liberty‘ is the right to discriminate. The right to use a religious belief to harm others, in the name of said religion/deity. ‘Don‘t tread on me!‘ while I tread on all others. When Andrew Torba, Nick Fuentes, M.T. Greene, Lauren Boebert, Doug 2y
JenniferEgnor Mastriano (and so many others!) tell you who they are, believe them. They are telling you now, what they are going to do. Pay attention to the small local elections, the social media groups, the organizations such as Moms for Liberty, Alliance Defending Freedom, Focus on the Family, as well as countless others. There is a giant network of these people, and it‘s global. Think Putin, Victor Orban, Georgia Maloney. All of them are connected. 2y
JenniferEgnor It‘s not just SCOTUS. These aren‘t just a few small names running in local seats. They are well funded with millions. And they never stop crafting ways to destroy secular values, institutions. We are headed straight into a totalitarian nightmare. It‘s not too late to stop it. Highly recommend this book. Get educated—this is much bigger, much worse than you think it is. 2y
JenniferEgnor Finally, yes, I‘m atheist. I grew up in a household with CN doctrine, and I know these beliefs are deep rooted and taken very seriously by fundamentalists. That‘s why this scares me. Everyone has the right to live in their own autonomy. There is strength in diversity. But this isn‘t it. It‘s your right to vote. Your vote is your voice, your power—use it! If it didn‘t matter, they wouldn‘t try so hard to take it away. Vote like your life depends on it. Like the lives of those you love, depend on it. It does. They do.

Such an important book! We're about five minutes away from becoming a full-blown theocracy. Stewart explains how.

I also recommend her other book, "The Good News Club: the Christian Right's Stealth Assault on America's Children."

California may look to the world like a blue state, but one in five adults are Evangelical Christian, and the state has more megachurches than any other. Although Orange County angled blue in the 2018 midterm elections, the margins were wafer-thin. As far as today's Christian right is concerned, California remains a battlefield.

This explains the intersection of Christian evangelism and political power. It‘s about taking the pulpit, church, religion, and followers and using them so billionaires can accumulate power worldwide. It affects kids, schools, women, health care, LGBTQIA+ people, people of color, ALL of us and tax dollars. Extreme eye opening and well done.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds very VERY timely. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It is just SO good. And yes, has a lot of information we need to know now. Take a look at the long review—it‘s got a ton more detail. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage The long review is even more interesting...darn it, I didn‘t need another MUST READ book to squeeze in, but this looks like one I need to. Great find and review! 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I know—sorry. We all need a longer TBR like a hole in the head. But this one really is worth it. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes it is! And yea, #BookishDilemmas can‘t be helped, and it‘s better than the dreaded alternative, nothing to read. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Indeed it forget what “nothing to read” feels like. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage 😂 Right! Litsy helped banish that one for sure! 4y
Scochrane26 I‘m going to have to add it to my tbr, too. I‘m hoping it will help me understand this issue more. I‘m a Christian but very much on the other side of this group. 4y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Scochrane26 I hope you find it helpful. She does make it clear that these aren‘t behaviors of all Christians. But she makes connections between various church networks and these bigger, control-oriented organizations. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Megabooks Cool. I think you‘ll find it fascinating. 4y

Finally started this ebook from the library, two months after seeing the author at my first quarantine virtual book event two months ago. I‘m alternately gasping and moaning. WTAF might have passed my lips. With all my highlights, I will probably end up buying this one. Also ... it‘s due pretty soon and I just started.

keithmalek I loved her book "The Good News Club." I'll definitely read this. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @keithmalek Thanks for the heads up. I‘d like to read her other book. This one is well written and just, wow. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly Sounds fascinating. I have wondered how the religious right came to have so much power. 4y
