Every Day Is Mother's Day
Every Day Is Mother's Day | Hilary Mantel
2 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Stephen King meets Muriel Spark in Hilary Mantel's first novel. Evelyn Axon - a medium by trade - and her half-wit daughter Muriel have become a social problem. Barricaded in their once-respectable house, they live amid festering rubbish, unhealthy smells - and secrets. They completely baffle Isabel Field, the social worker assigned to help them. But Isabel is only the most recent in a long line of people that find the Axons impossible. Meanwhile, Isabel has her own problems: a married lover, Colin. He is a history teacher to unresponsive children and father to a passel of his own horrible kids. With all this to worry about, how can Isabel even begin to understand what is going on in the Axon household? When Evelyn finally moves to defend Muriel, and Muriel, in turn, acts to protect herself, the results are by turns hilarious and terrifying.

When I read this blurb, I knew that I have to read that book. I thought the mother daughter would team up together and make life hard for their social worker. I also thought that their would be some funny scenes in this respect. ALL WRONG.

There‘s no funny scenes and it‘s the mother that does her best to avoid the social worker and keep her daughter inside. By the time I finished I wondered if I had read about the worst mum ever.

sarahbarnes This does sound very good! 2y
AnneCecilie @Librarybelle I had no idea this was her debut. That explains some tings, it felt a little jumpy in the beginning and I needed some pages to understand who everyone was. 2y
AnneCecilie @sarahbarahfofarah I was, once I realized it wasn‘t what I thought and was there for what it actually was 2y

One day, she thought, I shall always know what to do in these doubtful situations. When I am perfectly wise. When I am thirty years old.

(The things we believe when we‘re young.)

Ruthiella Still waiting for that wisdom in my 5th decade! 2y
TheBookgeekFrau 😂😂 I remember thinking that, too! And after celebrating the 23rd anniversary of my 30th birthday I've realized I'm still waiting 🤣 2y
batsy Ha! I remember thinking this in my teens and early twenties... 😁 2y
