From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler meets Chasing Vermeer in this clever middle grade debut When Theodora Tenpenny spills a bottle of rubbing alcohol on her late grandfathers painting, she discovers what seems to be an old Renaissance masterpiece underneath. Thats great news for Theo, whos struggling to hang onto her familys two-hundred-year-old townhouse and support her unstable mother on her grandfathers legacy of $463. Theres just one problem: Theos grandfather was a security guard at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and she worries the painting may be stolen. With the help of some unusual new friends, Theo's search for answers takes her all around Manhattan, and introduces her to a side of the cityand her grandfatherthat she never knew. To solve the mystery, she'll have to abandon her hard-won self-reliance and build a community, one serendipitous friendship at a time.

1. Under the Egg is a fun MG art mystery!
2. Scrambled with “everything but the bagel” seasoning!
3. Fresh eggs don‘t have to be refrigerated!

This book is much better than the cover would lead you to believe! It‘s a great middle grade example of my new favorite sub-genre: historical mystery. My only complaint is flat characters (the mom especially), but the historical research behind the mystery plot was great!

This book was outstanding and I‘d recommend it to readers young and old! What a gripping, unique tale of an art historical mystery. Combine that with a story about a girl who is pinching pennies to support her family and who is learning to make friends and step outside herself and you‘ve really got a middle grades winner on your hands. I can‘t give away too many other plot points!

I enjoyed reading both Under the Egg and Where'D You Go Bernadette. I need to get cracking on Voyager so I can be ready for season three of Outlander.

Liatrek Loved Voyager! Can't wait for season 3 :-) 8y
mrp27 @Liatrek These are such dense books it takes me awhile to read them, can't wait either! 8y

Someone described this as "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler" meets "Chasing Vermeer" and I agree. I love art mysteries and this is a really good one.

What I don't love is the cover. I have such a hard time getting kids to check this out. I think it's more the pallet than the art work.

Texreader I think it's the title. My first thought is that it's about chickens. 8y
respekt1111 @Texreader you mean it's NOT about chickens? 😕 8y
BookInMyHands @Texreader Good point! @respekt1111 Correct. It's an art mystery. A girl discovers a hidden painting under a painting of an egg. 8y

Another fantastic read! I'm a sucker for a good art mystery, and I think this one has great adult crossover potential. Well-written and full of interesting art facts. I found myself completely invested and wanted to sit and read it all in one go.

Suetara I'm glad that you liked it! 8y

This was such a fun little read! "If Dan Brown of The Da Vinci Code wrote middle-grade novels, this would be the one. " Kirkus Reviews
Yep, that about sums it up!! ?
