Charles Booth was a key social reformer of the 19th century who walked and mapped the streets of the east end of London, cataloguing the people, the conditions, the housing and the poverty. He amassed notebooks, journals and hand drawn maps of his research. Many generations of my family lived in these streets - indeed I still do! His research, brought together in this one large volume is important, timely, engrossing and actually very beautiful.
