Moby-Dick in Pictures
Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page | Matt Kish
3 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Inspired by one of the worlds greatest novels, Ohio artist Matt Kish set out on an epic voyage of his own one day in August 2009. More than one hundred and fifty years following the original publication of Moby-Dick, Kish began illustrating Herman Melvilles classic, creating an image a day over the next eighteen months based on text selected from every page of the 552-page Signet Classics paperback edition. Completely self-taught, Kish refused to set any boundaries for the artwork and employed a deliberately low-tech approach in response to the increasing popularity of born-digital art and literature. He used found pages torn from old, discarded books, as well as a variety of mediums, including ballpoint pen, marker, paint, crayon, ink, and watercolor. By layering images on top of existing words and images, Kish has crafted a visual masterpiece that echoes the layers of meaning in Melvilles narrative.

I used this book in another photo a few days ago, but it fits in so well with today's #artrelatedbooks theme, I thought I would share a little more of it with you. I had the opportunity to hear Matt Kish speak about this book a few years ago. It was fascinating to hear him talk about his reasons for doing this, as well as his process. I haven't read Moby-Dick yet, but when I do, it will be along with this book. #seasonsreadings2016

Pickpick

Not really a graphic novel per se but an amazing tribute to an excellent novel. By that I mean I don't think you really can follow the story by the passages he selects to illustrate but it's a visual feast nonetheless…
