Anthony Bourdain: The Last Interview
Anthony Bourdain: The Last Interview: and Other Conversations | MELVILLE HOUSE
11 posts | 13 read | 11 to read
The New York Times Bestseller The brilliant intellect and candor of Anthony Bourdain is on full display in this collection of interviews from throughout his remarkable career, including interviews with Neil Degrasse Tyson and Trevor Noah Anthony Bourdain always downplayed his skills as a chef (many disagreed). But despite his modesty, one thing even he agreed with was that he was a born raconteuras he makes clear in this collection of sparkling conversations. His wit, passion, and deep intelligence shine through all manner of discussion here, from heart-to-hearts with bloggers, to on-stage talks before massive crowds, to intense interviews with major television programs. Without fail, Bourdain is always blisteringly honestsuch as when he talks about his battles with addiction, or when detailing his thoughts on restaurant critics. He regularly dispenses arresting insight about how whats on your plate reveals much of history and politics. And perhaps best of all, the heartfelt empathy he developed travelling the world for his TV shows is always in the fore, as these talks make the Hemingway of gastronomy, as chef Marco Pierre White called him, live again.

I had been wanting to try a last interview edition for awhile, and I was really impressed with how well the editors captured, in just a few interviews, the arc of Bourdain‘s public life. From his early boys-club attitude and first travels to the changes his daughter‘s birth and years of travel made to his obsession with Asia and involvement in the Me Too movement. It‘s sad that his life ended so abruptly, but I‘m glad to have read this. #NFNov

actualdisneyprincess I‘ve had it on my shelf since it was released, and I just can‘t bring myself to do it yet. I loved him so much. 😭 2y
Megabooks @actualdisneyprincess he was truly one-of-a-kind! 2y

Cinfhen Did you find it had a lot of overlap from this one 2y
Megabooks @Ann_Reads thank you 💜 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen Bourdain is his life in other people‘s words, and this is his life in his own. So I‘d have to say no real overlap. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen and moreover his life represented in small moments. Really interesting way of looking at him. 2y
Cinfhen Thanks for that good insight. I think I‘ll pick it up if I can find it at a good price.I‘m not a huge fan so it‘s not a top priority. 2y

It‘s a rainy, windy day today, but a great day for books! My #botm arrived including my shelf slayer bookmark.

Yesterday, I went to my local indie, Bluestocking Social in Evansville, IN, and picked up Mayflies and the tagged book. I highly recommend them if you‘re in the area!

Cinfhen That bookmark is ginormous!! Cool 😎 ⚔️ 2y
squirrelbrain Mayflies is so good but very 😢 2y

I miss the curiosity, empathy, intellect, vulnerability, and listening skills of Bourdain. The interviews were great and I can‘t wait to travel again when this pandemic passes, but I wanted more Bourdain.

MeganPagan Same. His death hit me hard. When I‘m down, I put on an episode of one of his shows. 💚 5y

I agree with Karin @8little_paws' review that there's a notable, and in my opinion, unfortunate, change in tone in the more recent interviews, but that probably says as much about the world of journalism as it does about Bourdain.

Left me feeling: wistful, amused and contemplative. #ThreeWordReviews

I think this is a pick...I liked all the interviews selected here. I suspect they've been edited for length and I wish that wasn't the case. I do feel that there was a negative change in him after he ended his marriage to Ottavia and started dating Asia. But who can ever say. I'm slowly making my way through his nonfiction writing, I hope to pick up some more by him later this year. If you miss him, go read Edward Lee's Buttermilk Graffiti!

JenReadsAlot Still can't believe he is gone... 5y
Twainy I have an actual hardcover copy of Typhoid Mary in my TBR stack 😁 if you weren‘t joking (Edward Lee 🤨) I‘ll look for Buttermilk Graffiti. Thank you 😁🤗 5y
8little_paws @twainy I would argue Edward Lee is a better food writer than Bourdain is. Buttermilk Graffiti is exquisite. 5y

This series is awesome. Kobe‘s death last week got me missing Anthony Bourdain all over again. These interviews bring back his voice through interviews over his career and remind us why we miss him: he was empathetic and positioned to see the world through another‘s eyes with food but really about so much more. I still miss him but enjoyed the remembrance.

This is a collection of interviews Bourdain has done over the years, including the last one published 5 days before he died. I thought it was interesting what views were consistent and what changed over time. Also there are more books in this series!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I like “The Last Interview” books for the most part. I‘m curious to know more about the interview selection process. Often, the books are too slim and I want more, but I‘m sure there‘s some bureaucratic reason for that. With Bourdain, I liked the earlier interviews best. The official “last interview” was not that exciting. Still worth a read if you‘re a fan.

britt_brooke This was decent @Megabooks but too short! Have you read any of the last interview books? They‘re interesting. 5y
Megabooks No I haven‘t! I didn‘t even know about them before this. Any in particular you‘d recommend? 5y
britt_brooke @Megabooks So far, the only others I‘ve read are Vonnegut and DFW. I need to read the Salinger. There are a bunch out there and it‘s not exclusive to authors. I really want the Nora Ephron one. 5y

heidisreads Vonnegut and Salinger?! Ummm I need to look into these! 5y
britt_brooke @heidisreads My two favorite authors! 💚💚 I‘ve had the Salinger one for ages. Not sure why I haven‘t read it yet. Maybe I‘ll read it next. I loved the Vonnegut one! 5y
heidisreads @britt_brooke Stacking them! Thanks for mentioning them :) 5y
britt_brooke @heidisreads Absolutely! This is why Litsy is awesome. 💚 5y

I‘m the only one awake. 🙌🏻 I haven‘t read at all today and it‘s 8:30pm. That‘s unusual. 😆 But, no complaints. It‘s been a great day with my family filled with soccer games, a school project, and delicious grilled buffalo wings. #booksandbrews
