Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (Revised)
Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (Revised) | Cory Doctorow
4 posts | 21 read | 13 to read
Bursting with cutting-edge speculation and human insight, Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom is a coming-of-age romantic comedy and a kick-butt cybernetic tour de forceJules is a young man barely a century old. He's lived long enough to see the cure for death and the end of scarcity, to learn ten languages and compose three symphonies...and to realize his boyhood dream of taking up residence in Disney World.Disney World! The greatest artistic achievement of the long-ago twentieth century. Now in the care of a network of volunteer "ad-hocs" who keep the classic attractions running as they always have, enhanced with only the smallest high-tech touches. Now, though, it seems the "ad hocs" are under attack. A new group has taken over the Hall of the Presidents and is replacing its venerable audioanimatronics with new, immersive direct-to-brain interfaces that give guests the illusion of being Washington, Lincoln, and all the others. For Jules, this is an attack on the artistic purity of Disney World itself. Worse: it appears this new group has had Jules killed. This upsets him. (It's only his fourth death and revival, after all.) Now it's war: war for the soul of the Magic Kingdom, a war of ever-shifting reputations, technical wizardry, and entirely unpredictable outcomes.

I can't believe it's already time for October's #BookSpin list! I'm making progress on my backlist but I really need to get in gear. New to the list this month is the tagged and Stranger in a Strange Land. I'm starting to put more kindle books on the list which is hard to know how chonky they are.

Pickpick

This felt a lot like a black mirror episode. It was my first Cory Doctorow, are they all like this?

Humans don‘t have to die anymore- you can backup your memories so that if you do die you can be rebooted with all your previous life intact. If your body starts to feel too old, you can be downloaded into a younger body. (I‘m feeling kind of creaky and would probably go for that!)

I had fun with this, and will definitely read more by Doctorow!

Fr3NcHtOaSt It was also the first Doctorow book I read as well. I liked it but I remember lending it to an English professor in college and it was never returned. 4y

AmyG Ha...I like the download to a younger body, too. I got progressive glasses today. Ugh. I have never read his books. (edited) 4y

RamsFan1963 @Soubhiville This was my first Doctorow also, but definitely not my favorite. Someone Comes To Town, Someone Leaves Town (2005) and For The Win (2010) are my personal favorites. Little Brother and Homeland are good too, they tie into his new book Attack Surface. 4y

Lent my physical copy to a sci-fi literature professor back in college years back. She never returned it to me. Learned a lesson. Don‘t lend out my books, unless it is close personal family or friends. Decided to reread this again, just because.

#bookmail is the best mail! I read the description for this book while on Goodreads one day and decided I have to have it!

Zelma That sounds so weird but possibly brilliant. Looking forward to hearing your review! 7y
