Ok I know this is not anything close to the focus of this book BUT this is almost verbatim what we were told in my 4 years of theatre school. I hated it then because I‘ve always been interested in lots of things (hence dramaturg). I hate it now because it sounds like a challenge to a group of optimistic 18-22 year olds romanticizing suffering for your art. It sets people up to be taken advantage of because you love the work though right?

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I had a Broadcasting professor who had a contact at the then Regis & Kelly Show for an internship. $5/day for 10 hour days to commute from NJ at an ungodly hour in the morning. I told my professor thanks but no thanks, it's not worth it. I found one at a small radio station at the NJ shore, with better hours, generous bosses who bought us food & drinks, and I got to see bands, help with promos, & go to the beach. I wasn't suffering for work. 4y
mdemanatee @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick good for you! I had paid internships/apprenticeships and considered myself lucky (especially as I didn‘t come from family money that makes a lot of internships possible). But @ the apprenticeship I was basically doing entry level work for a weekly stipend (paid on a 1099 so tax time was fun). I‘ve tried to keep in contact w/ both since to varying degrees of success. 4y
mdemanatee @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I should also mention these were two major and established regional theatres, not storefronts. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick That's awesome! Getting paid is even better! I ended up graduating after 4.5 years instead of 4 just to do this internship and work full-time at a hotel. I stuck with the hotel business and said no to broadcasting since most of it wasn't valued without lots of "paying your dues". 4y
mdemanatee @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I mean...the pay existed but wasn‘t much. Yup. The “paying your dues” mentality in too, too many fields that favors those with the means to pay them. 4y

Mehso-so

The audio version of this book didn‘t do it for me. It was depressing. I suspect I would have enjoyed the development and “reveal” more if I had read this in print instead of listening to it. I was surprised to learn at the end, it was the author who read it. The pace of the reading felt falsely beatnik.

This one hits very close to home. I‘m still trying to find belonging with my mother language and culture.

There seems to be a trend towards poetic memoirs lately. This reminded me a bit of On Earth We‘re Briefly Gorgeous, by Ocean Vuong - only a little less dark. Similar themes of family trauma and displacement. I loved this book so much. I can‘t wait to hand sell the hell out of it at work when it comes out in January.

Just started this one. Reading it mostly because of the cover. Comes out in January. So far, the writing is stunning.
