Fiction. WOMEN is a novella about falling in love with a woman, about loving women, about being a woman. It is a novella about a mother and a daughter. A novella about female friendships that blur the line of romance. A novella about a woman who, after having her first sexual relationship with a woman, goes on a series of (comical) OK Cupid dates with other women. A novella about a woman in her twenties who doesn't know if she's gay or straight or bi. A novella about falling in love and having your heart broken and figuring out what to do next. The book is an urgent recall of heartbreak, of a stark identity in crisis.

When Finn and I are drinking in dark bars, we forget we are in public, it‘s as though we go underwater. When we finish kissing, she pulls away and looks around, saying, Woah, everything is still here. We spend the nights looking at each other and not much else.

I ask Finn if things are always this insane and dramatic between two women, and she says yes. She says it's either like this, or monotonous and boring. As if there is no in-between.

Gorgeously compulsive writing. I literally read it in one sitting, I was so obsessed with the narrator‘s thoughts and the love story which felt very unhealthy but very relatable, often really funny, thought provoking and sometimes straight up sad. I wish this could have been longer. A great addition to the queer lady corpus

LeeRHarry What did you think of The Woman that Fooled the World? I have this book but I‘m scared to read it in case I get too angry! 4y
Emilymdxn @LeeRHarry I really liked it! It did make me angry for sure but the writing was very good 4y

I started this one after the recent episode of #TheLWordGenQ and I devoured it. It was a short, and addictive ride through a whirlwind love affair. It was straight to the point and hit you in your gut right til the bitter end.

4/5🌟 Caldwell's writing has an addictive quality to it.This is a story of a young woman who moves to a new city for a change of senery. She meets and older woman who is gay and has a girlfriend. But they begin to hang out and start to have an affair. This novella takes us through the ups and downs of their romance.Provocative and yet profound. A book about love, obsessive and heartbreaking kind of love. Slim in size but really packs a punch!

I could live this life, devastating memoirs and all.

megt I could live that life, too. I love fiction, but in doing some reflection in the past few years I've realized that I spent a lot of my formative reading years with heavy themed nonfiction. Which probably explains why the devastating stories are still so compelling to me now. 8y
RebeccaH That's interesting @megt. I love fiction too, but I think my favorite fiction is not so far from memoir -- about voice and consciousness. 8y
megt @RebeccaH Great insight. Reflective narratives that really dive into a character (or characters) do make for compelling reads, whether they're fiction or nonfiction. 8y

Did a massive book cull to make room for our upcoming road trip purchases from @Powells & Elliot Bay Books! We are staying in the neighborhood so I can seek out the best finds, like this book I bought because of the shelf talker! I fully expect the trunk to look like this... And I CANNOT WAIT!

What to do when your flight is delayed for an hour: drink beer, read a new book, and keep an eye on the Cubs game.

OffTheBeatenShelf.com I can't wait to hear what you think of Women! I just finished a writing class with Chloe and I really liked her. 8y
suzannewhtny @OffTheBeatenShelf.com That sounds awesome! I am feeling really bummed. I read the first half before my flight and now that I'm home, I can't find it to finish. I guess I'll have to find another copy! 8y
