A spooky and adventurous debut illustrated fantasy novel about a girl made of dust and bone and imagination who seeks the truth about the magic that brought her to life. "This magical story--and the brave girl in its pages--will haunt you in the best way." --Natalie Lloyd, New York Times bestselling author of Over the Moon"Remember, my dear, you do not really and truly exist." Irrelle fears she's not quite real. Only the finest magical thread tethers her to life--and to Miss Vesper. But for all her efforts to please her cruel creator, the thread is unraveling. Irrelle is forgetful as she gathers bone dust. She is slow returning from the dark passages beneath the cemetery. Worst of all, she is unmindful of her crooked bones. When Irrelle makes one final, unforgivable mistake by destroying a frightful creature just brought to life, Miss Vesper threatens to imagine her away once and for all. Defying her creator for the very first time, Irrelle flees to the underside of the graveyard and embarks on an adventure to unearth the mysterious magic that breathes bones to life, even if it means she will return to dust and be no more.Debut author Heather Kassner's The Bone Garden is a gorgeously written story--illustrated by Matt Saunders--humming with magic, mystery, and dark imaginings. Perfect for fans of Holly Black, Jonathan Auxier, and Katherine Arden."[Evokes] the dreamy tone and themes of Neil Gaiman's Coraline and The Graveyard Book . . . an impressive new fairy tale that will appeal to fans of Lisa Graff's subtly magical stories." --Booklist

Creepy middle grade may be my jam. I was definitely into spooky books when I was in middle school, but not so much as an adult. Def do not like creepy books for adults (except maybe southern gothic).

Kassner said at an author event this weekend at my work that her grandmother was a librarian, & Grimm‘s fairy tales featured big in childhood read alouds.

What a creepy, subtle, beautiful MG book. My son enjoyed it and we‘d definitely pick up another book by this author.

This was a wicked little tale about a girl who “borrows” the dust from bones for the lady who care for her. She slowly uncovers deep secrets and sets out to solve them with some help from two others, who she learns she has more in common with then she thought. It‘s all action and immediately starts out in the throes of story telling and just takes off, never a dull moment!

Another fun and creepy middle grade book, perfect for Halloween. Kassner tells a unique and imaginative story about a girl made of bones, who lives to serve her creator Miss Vesper. The atmosphere reminded me a bit of Coraline, or anything Tim Burton puts to screen really. I listened to the audiobook for the second half and the was enjoyable too.

Great writing & a feisty heroine more than compensate for a good (really good but I wanted a little more) but not great MG story which is still likely to be a hit with students looking for a creepy, atmospheric read because this one has everything—bones, bones, & more bones, an evil witch, children made of dust & bone & imagination, bats, a mystery to solve, & a runaway hand (yes really, a runaway hand). An offbeat, creative & entertaining story.

Going with MG for my next Saturday morning book. It‘s the story of Irréelle, made of dust and bone and imagination, who embarks on an adventure to find the magic that brings bones to life. One quote I saw about this book referenced Neil Gaiman so of course I have to read it! Love the cover and am definitely intrigued by the premise.
