7 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
Asteroids, killer sharks, nuclear bombs, viruses, deadly robots, climate change, the apocalypse - why is Hollywood so obsessed with death and the end of the world? And how seriously should we take the dystopian visions of our favourite films? With wit, intelligence and irreverence, Rick Edwards and Dr Michael Brooks explore the science of death and mass destruction through some of our best-loved Hollywood blockbusters. From Armageddon and Dr Strangelove to The Terminator and Contagion, they investigate everything from astrophysics to AI, with hilarious and captivating consequences. Packed with illustrations, fascinating facts and numerous spoilers, Hollywood Wants to Kill You is the perfect way into the science of our inevitable demise.

I don't usually read books like this but the movie connection hooked me in.
It totally exceeded my expectations, instead of just dry facts recounted, the information was witty and so funny it just made me laugh.
Packed full of movie history and facts blended with science this is also a great way of learning too.
It was chock full with diagrams, illustrations, bullet point snippets of information all told with the authors' hilarious banter.

This is brilliant fun, full of movie and science facts.
The information is easily digestible and told in a humourous way.
This is not my usual kind of reading but I really enjoyed this.
I know a bit about movies but very little about science so I felt that as this is a factual I was learning as well as enjoying the book at the same time.
Not at all patronising and just overall great fun.

My overriding feeling whilst reading this book is a sense of wonderment that any of us are still alive. The facts presented are very incredible, and show just how delicate and yet tenacious life is.
This is a very intelligently written book, which is also attention-grabbing and easy to flip through. Each chapter focuses on a different film related to the theme of the chapter, and uses it to draw out different ideas and concepts.

I loved it, this was laugh out loud funny in the way it was written.
It mixes the history of movies past and the science behind some of the storyline.
Viruses, killer plants etc just being a few of the topics covered.
The banter between the authors was hilarious and I find it easy to take in and remember information in small paragraphs so this was perfect.
I had fun while reading it and was in a way learning as I read.
Would highly recommend.

A look at some of the ways Hollywood kills us and the science behind it. the plant chapter was particularly fascinating. I'm not sure @Clwojick if this falls under our topic for #TeamSlaughter though it does have more than 200 pages so maybe #ScaryScavengerHunt. #Scareathlon
