The Whitsun Weddings | Philip Larkin
6 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Philip Larkin (1922-1985) remains England's best-loved poet - a writer matchlessly capable of evoking his native land and of touching all readers from the most sophisticated intellectual to the proverbial common reader. The late John Betjeman observed that 'this tenderly observant poet writes clearly, rhythmically, and thoughtfully about what all of us can understand'. Behind this modest description lies a poet who made greatness look, in Milton's prescription, 'simple, sensuous and passionate'. This collection, first published in 1967, contains many of his best-loved poems, including The Whitsun Weddings, An Arundel Tomb, Days, Mr Bleaney and MCMXIV.

Pickpick

A little cynical, but a guarded pick. The one pictured is my favorite of the bunch.

In celebration of the wonderful 2017 city of culture Hull, home of my wife and a place i love and never tire of visiting. The poetry on my shelf is limited but this slim volume is brilliant.

Happy Birthday to Philip Larkin (1922-1985)! Although the more I find out about his personal life, the less I like him as a person, discovering his poetry has been one of the joys of this reading year. His poems are sparse, haunting, and without mercy when it comes to their insight. This occasion has reminded me I need to finish the uncollected poems in "The Complete Poems!" #bookishbirthday #backfromanexistentiallitsycrisis ?

LauraBeth When I was in my early 20s I went on a date with a guy who made me read Larkin's poetry. On the date. While that didn't work out I was glad to be introduced to Larkin 😀 8y
Sydsavvy @LauraBeth God that story brings back dating memories. 😳🙄😂💃💃💃 8y

Pickpick

I liked this one less than the other two, and this is the most modern of the 3. That said, the collection is loaded with corkers like these - and there's a great one about an advert, too. Larkin's skeptical view of British rural life felt...appropriate today.

GuiltyFeat I studied this for my A-Level back in the 80s. Loved it then, love it now. 8y
