I found this after reading LaValle‘s reworking https://litsy.com/p/QXZMQm54VGg4 To use Lovecraftian parlance, I nearly fainted at the indescribable terror that awaited me as I climbed over the cyclopean walls and into the land of Ra‘Cism. This isn‘t in the Cthulhu Mythos, but as it starts where LaValle‘s cosmic tale ended,it‘s a good retrofit. LaValle doesn‘t attack the racism of this story,he presents what it‘s like to be at the end of such bigotry

Lovecraft created a delightfully creepy setting and tone. But that was about it. There wasn‘t much going on in relation to plot, characters, or anything else...it certainly doesn‘t help that the author‘s racism and hatred of ethnic minorities was clear throughout the tale. I read this as a prelude to The Ballad of Black Tom. No more Lovecraft for me! 16 pts (I think, maybe 🤔😂). #teamharkness #screamathon #scarathlon2020

Annie1215 I have a whole anthology of HP Lovecraft I haven‘t gotten around to, but it‘s on my list. I know there‘s a good amount of connection to some of the stories to Salem and Massachusetts in general. I can‘t account for the source material but it retells really well as a history tour lol. 4y

Pickpick

There are valid issues with Lovecraft's personal views which I will not reiterate because they are well documented. Speaking purely about the short story, it is one of HPL's NYC tales. It was a good police investigation-style mystery with the typical supernatural/horror elements.

I listened to this #audiobook on YouTube, and the ONLY reason I made it through is that I wanted to read The Ballad of Black Tom and be able to appreciate how it reworked the story.

This short story is racist as all get out, and on top of that, it's not even good. It's by far the weakest Lovecraft I've read so far. This leaves it without any merit whatsoever in my book.

Go check out Black Tom though! I haven't finished yet, but it's stunning!

Well it was ok...but I should preface this with A) I‘m not a horror fan, and B) I didn‘t think it was really scary or even suspenseful.

I think I‘m missing something essential to love these stories. Well off to finish up my other reading before today‘s @LitsyFeministBookClub discussion.

Leniverse No one likes the Horror at Red Hook. It's rather xenophobic and just not very good. And I say that as someone who loves Lovecraft. 7y
Caterina Ayyyyy I also just reviewed this! I HATED it. So racist and on top of that not even good. I've enjoyed some of the other Lovecraft I've read! @Leniverse I agree! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Leniverse @Caterina Hahaha! Well then, I guess it‘s not just me! 7y
