Destined to become a classic of adventure literature, The Last Season examines the extraordinary life of legendary backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson and his mysterious disappearance in California's unforgiving Sierra Nevadamountains as perilous as they are beautiful. Eric Blehm's masterful work is a gripping detective story interwoven with the riveting biography of a complicated, original, and wholly fascinating man.

When Randy Morganson disappeared, he had been a volunteer backcountry ranger in a national park for almost 30 years. Mainly based in the Sierra Nevada, he grew up feeling that the wilderness was his real home & where he was truly happy & his job was always more of a vocation than a career.

When he went missing whilst patrolling his allotted area, Randy had been having some troubles in his personal life & those he worked with (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf were unsure if he had just walked away or was out there somewhere injured & waiting for help. This is the story of Randy's life & the search for him in an area which had hidden the wreckage of a plane crash for almost 20 years. It was the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' situation. Can they find him & will it be in time?

This is an intriguing read. What could have happened? After setting the scene of his disappearance, the narrative goes back in
3mo
OutsmartYourShelf time to consider Randy's childhood & we return to his past at several junctures throughout the book. Randy had plenty of good points in his love of nature & wish to conserve the wilderness for future generations, but he was also a complicated man & made some decisions which were rather selfish.

It was really interesting even if the reader has a looming sense of sadness as there wasn't much doubt that there wouldn't be a happy resolution to this
3mo
OutsmartYourShelf one. I was expecting it to remain open-ended but there is sort of an ending even if it is mainly conjecture at this point. 4🌟

A fascinating look at the life and death of a man who worked as a back country ranger in sequoia national park for 28 seasons. Randy Morgenstern‘s enduring love for the park and the rugged landscape comes through in the writing. The search for him when he goes missing is just as interesting.

Well I picked this up cheap and was pleasantly surprised. The tale of the disappearance of Randy Morgenson the most experienced back country rangers at Sequoia and Kings Canyon in California who disappeared one day on patrol. As the search intensifies we find more of Randy‘s life, his love of the wild country and his emotional turmoil from a failing marriage raising questions as to whether the disappearance is intentional. A touching book.

"Go, on your own. Be adventuresome. Don't forever seek the easiest way. Take the way you find. Don't demand trail signs and sturdy bridges. Don't demand we show you the mountains. Seek them and find them yourself... Here is your one chance to get lost, fall in the creek, find a beautiful place."

Starting off this #litsypartyofone with some leftover Halloween candy and the last half of this very sad true story. I think I'm going to need some more candy to get through the final chapters of this one though. 😢 💔

A remarkably summer-like day! Taking advantage with a little #frontporchreading. This one's about a backcountry ranger who goes missing and the efforts made to find him. It's well-written, if a little on the sad side. Reminiscent of Krakauer's Into The Wild.

The subtitle gave away this tragic story but the tale was riveting and made me feel like I was there during the search. Eric Blehm weaved in so much of Randy Morgenson's personal journal that he brought him alive again.
