Picnic in Provence
Picnic in Provence: A Tale of Love in France, with Recipes | Elizabeth Bard
16 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 24 to read
When Elizabeth Bard followed a handsome Frenchman up the spiral staircase to a love nest in the heart of Paris, they thought they had found their perfect home. But life had other ideas. Falling in love with a quirky house full of history on a last romantic jaunt before the birth of their first child, Elizabeth and Gwendal decide to move lock, stock and Le Creuset to the French countryside; a land of blue skies, lavender fields and peaches that taste like sunshine. Part memoir, part chocolate-smudged family cookbook, 'Picnic in Provence' is about everything that happens after the happily ever after, and reminds us that life, in and out of the kitchen, is a rendezvous with the unexpected.

#JulyJourneys #picnic 🧺

I read the author‘s first book, Lunch in Paris, for my virtual foodie book club back in 2011 & I think that the tagged book, the follow-up, has been on my Kindle #TBR for about as long.🤷🏻‍♀️

Shae_Purcell I read Lunch in Paris around the same time as Molly Wizenberg's A Homemade Life, and I couldn't help but compare the two. I much preferred Wizenberg's story and recipes, but I think I would have liked this one better had I not read them nearly side by side. 3y
JamieArc I received this book from @catiewithac recently, since I‘m a huge Francophile, and am hoping to get to it this summer. 3y
DebinHawaii @Shae_Purcell Too funny as I went back to my blog & looked & we read them the same year but we read Lunch in Paris a few months before A Homemade Life! I preferred A Homemade Life too. 3y
DebinHawaii @JamieArc I think I you will enjoy it then! 💜 3y

This is the author‘s second book, but I don‘t think I lost anything by reading this one first. I would still like to read about her life in Paris, but it will feel like a prequel, now. Picnic in Provence is a charming memoir and I love geeking out on the yummy recipes, which I‘ll probably never make. Elizabeth Bard is a lovely human being, living her best life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mild pick. I thought I would adore this one, following the writer's move from Paris to Provence, but the writer spends much of her time in angst on childrearing and I'm really only reading for the food. The descriptions of the people and the scenery were great, but I enjoyed her first book more.

#ReadingResolutions #spring 🌷I had good intentions of taking a pic of something green, blooming or spring-like (we don't have big seasonal differences here) but alas, it's gray & drizzly on the first day of spring. Instead I'm going with the book I just got for 50 cents at the library bookstore with it's spring-ish cover, a pic of purple crocuses my niece took because they remind her of my mom 💜& Cadbury Mini Eggs-which always say spring to me.

Johanna414 Mmm Cadbury Mini eggs... my favorite 7y
BethFishReads We had snow flurries today 😭 7y
Lcsmcat I have no self-control around Mini-eggs! 7y

DebinHawaii @Johanna414 @Lcsmcat I *may* have bought a bag and I *may* have hidden that bag away ,up high until I am emotionally prepared to open it and not eat them all ... or until I lose all control, rip open the bag and start shoveling them into my mouth! 🤣😋🤣 7y
DebinHawaii @BethFishReads Gloomy grey with rain splats here. 🤣 7y

Not my favorite book set in France. Although many like this author I feel we wouldn't be good friends. Unemotional and somewhat snarky she had a negative attitude and a seeming inability to be a warm affectionate person. Many things American are spoken of negatively ad nauseam. I got tired of "You'd never see this in France" and "French people never would do this" and took those comment as a value judgement. Maybe I was just too easily offended?

readinginthedark I was on the fence about whether to read this one; maybe I'll just skip it. 😕 7y

One third way through and okay so far. I do enjoy Peter Mayle's Provence writings more than this which is short on details long on relationships. What was fascinating was learning that when you forage for mushrooms you can bring them to your pharmacist for identification. Interesting oui? 🍄😵

EvieBee I love Mayle as well so I'm always critical of others doing the France thing but I bought this one not too long ago. Wondering if I'll like it. 7y
SaraFair Peter Mayle fan, me too! I like all memoirs of English/American in France. Have you tried: 7y
Dolly @SaraFair @EvieBee84 I enjoy nonfiction set in foreign counties in general. This one may get better as other reviews mention interesting details. Seven Letters from Paris is now on my TBR. Enjoyed both your comments. Thanks! 😀 7y

EvieBee @SaraFair I was looking it up and realized I bought the kindle book years ago. I need to read my own books! Thank you! 😳☺️ 7y
Dolly I hear you. I tend to put books I own on the back burner because I can read those anytime, whereas with borrowed the clock is ticking and those on hold will inevitably show up at the most inopportune time. It's a shame really.😕 @EvieBee84 7y
Dolly @SaraFair The Olive Farm is on my TBR and I thought Almost French was too but it is When in French instead. Will rectify that immediately.😊 Have you read any of the above? 7y
SaraFair Yes, both. Seven Letters is the most like Pater Mayle, as it has some humor. Almost French and The Olive Farm are about women/families that buy a house in France and the differences of living there. Don't know if I will ever get there, so about every fourth book I read is France related! 7y

#TBRtemptation post! Oh maaaan, I really need this one. A follow-up to her move from NYC to Paris, Elizabeth, her husband, and soon-to-be son visit Provence. They find a famous poet's home, hear of a buried manuscript, and love the cuisine. And they move there. And start an *artisanal ice cream shop* 😱 (while starting parenthood)!!! They experiment with yogurt, olive oil, stuffed veggies, ice creams, sorbets....yowza! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Nuwanda You may have convinced me that I NEED this book. I loved the first one! 8y
LeslieO Oh yes, I love the first one, too! 8y
SaraFair Must have. Love most any book where American is trying to figure out France! 8y
MrBook @Nuwanda Yesss 😁👏🏻🙌🏻! @LeslieO Still need to read the first one *sighs* 😊. @SaraFair 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! I need to visit France someday ☺️. 8y
