'You must be Odysseus, man of twists and turns...' The tales of Odysseus's struggle with a man-eating Cyclops and Circe, the beautiful enchantress who turns men into swine. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Next to nothing is known about Homer's life. His works available in Penguin Classics are The Homeric Hymns, The Iliad and The Odyssey.

A quick little read I picked up at a bookstore recently. I‘ve read The Odyssey before, but I wanted a refresher on Circe‘s scenes. I am hoping to re-read Miller‘s Circe soon because I love that book so much. Rereading the original story I was reminded of the beautiful language and the brutality of the story. So much death and violence, but told so lyrically.

MicheleinPhilly I‘m curious about Gracie‘s sculpture. 🤔😉 2y

Discussion Question Number Three.

SoniaC I thought he was an uncaring bully and she desperately at first wanted his love and attention. Not to mention feared him. By the end she no longer seemed to fear him was no longer looking for his love and approval. 6y
tpixie @SoniaC yes, I agree. 6y

I read the entirety of The Odyssey earlier this year, so these two episodes were nothing new. I must say, I do love the sorceress Circe, even though she's kinda evil. Painting by Wright Barker.

batsy I've a soft spot for Circe, as well 🐷 7y
Brie @batsy I'm very interested in this upcoming novel about Circe. 7y
batsy @Brie Me too! Especially since her other book The Song of Achilles seems to be well-loved here. 7y

❝ You must be Odysseus, man of twists and turns . . .❞
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller was so good that it makes me want to read The Iliad and The Odyssey. This short is from The Odyssey. Love Penguin's Little Black Classics.
