The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday
The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday | Saad Z. Hossain
"Saad Z. Hossain continues to blow through the flimsy walls of genre like a whirlwind with The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday, sweeping science-fiction, fantasy, myth, and satire into the wildly imaginative vortex of his ever-expanding fictional universe of alternate djinn-history and futures. Hossain's wit and wry compassion create a vision of humanity's hurtling path through time and space as both farcical and epic, leaving a blazing trail of casualties and wonders."Indra Das When the djinn king Melek Ahmar wakes up after millennia of imprisoned slumber, he finds a world vastly different from what he remembers. Arrogant and bombastic, he comes down the mountain expecting an easy conquest: the wealthy, spectacular city state of Kathmandu, ruled by the all-knowing, all-seeing tyrant AI Karma. To his surprise, he finds that Kathmandu is a cut-price paradise, where citizens want for nothing and even the dregs of society are distinctly unwilling to revolt. Everyone seems happy, except for the old Gurkha soldier Bhan Gurung. Knife saint, recidivist, and mass murderer, he is an exile from Kathmandu, pursuing a forty-year-old vendetta that leads to the very heart of Karma. Pushed and prodded by Gurung, Melek Ahmer finds himself in ever deeper conflicts, until they finally face off against Karma and her forces. In the upheaval that follows, old crimes will come to light and the city itself will be forced to change. #BookMail is the best mail! These beauties came today and I am hype. I read the tagged from the library originally and really liked it so I figured I‘d get it to read again with the sequel. I found out about the Wheel from a listicle but none of my libraries had a copy. I‘ve loved everything else I read by her so was willing to purchase it.

#TBRPile 📚 “Drip. Drip. Twenty years of ice melt, wearing away long-buried boulders, reveals a sudden right angle of stone, a geometric peculiarity in the otherwise pristine geology of the Kanchenjunga, most scared of mountains, five conjoined peaks in the heart of the Himalayas, forbidden to climbers, one of the few remaining secret places of the Earth.”

Saad Z. Hossain, you genius, you. This was brilliant, and one of the best written stories I've ever read in my entire life. Never have I highlighted so many passages in a book before. 🤩 All Hail the Lord of Tuesday!

⭐: 5

"There were databases that could not be erased so easily. Data imprinted in meat. There were still people who remembered things from back then, who droned on and on about the good old days. He had to find that oft-ignored resource: old people."

“You‘re a good Hume,” he said to Gurung, in between mouthfuls. “I had sworn to dismember the first one I found, but no. Behold my awesome mercy. I will stay my hand. But sooner or later, the urge to decapitate someone will become unbearable, be warned.”

The Lord of Tuesday though. 👀

This one was really fun! Quite different than I expected, but a cool mix of folk tale and sci fi. Also mostly light and (possibly tried to hard to be) funny, which is much needed these days!

Tor.com is just killing it with their published novellas these days. An arrogant djinn king, The Lord of Tuesday, wakes up after being imprisoned for about 4K years and hooks up with an embittered Gurkha soldier who has an unidentified ax to grind. The djinn is confronted with an AI Karma controlled, nanotech futuristic city (Kathmandu) that he wants to conquer. Or does he actually just want to party? Some laugh out loud dialogue ensues.

I managed to finish nine books this month so I'm off to a good start.
1 audiobook
2 ebooks
6 physical
I earned 665 points for the #BuriedAliveChallenge this month with an average of 95 points per qualifying book.
Top three for this month would be Sweep with Me, The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, and The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday.

I think that this was great fun to read and at only 165 pages not too much of a time investment. There was a nice blend between a high tech city run by an AI and the magic of the Djinn protagonist. It was humerous in a slightly sarcastic way which aligns with my sense of humour greatly and now I'm curious about the author's other works.

I picked this up from the library today and I only vaguely recall placing a hold for it. I‘m shocked they TAPED the hold slip to the paper cover. There‘s no protective coating on the book so I‘m afraid to take it off.

A djinn king who's been imprisoned for millenia is awakened to find his world altered. Seeking humans to rule over he stumbles across an old Gurkha soldier living off the grid. The Gurkha takes the djinn to Kathmandu, now run by an AI called Karma who has set up a new paradise. Next comes sinning, magic mischief making, & a weary djinn who just wants a decent goat sacrifice being manipulated by the Gurkha to bring the whole place crashing down.

Mehso-so

...and done. I wanted to love this story about a cursed djinn king and an exiled mass murderer, but the concept was much more interesting than the actual execution. The near constant f-bombs dropped by a supposedly thousands-of-years-old supernatural being were distracting, but I was compelled to read on to see how things ultimately played out. 2 stars, tops. A book to borrow, not buy, IMO.

Most of this book has been just “meh” so far, but there are occasional bright spots like this one that make me laugh. #Bailey is sleeping in the background, of course. 😍😴
