My nine-year-old and I really enjoyed this book. It‘s a fascinating story told simply and effectively. The graphic design is one of the best I‘ve seen in a book for this age group, with wonderful illustrations between parts and within chapters. Some of the illustrations are even by the real life Manjiro. My one major complaint would be that there are some major leaps in time which feel abrupt. But given the audience the book is nearly perfect.

Just started this with my 9-year-old today. (The book; not the film RAN, I just thought that made a cool background). I was prepared to read it on my own but she said she would give it a shot.

My book was named Heart of a Samurai.
Genre: Children's literature, Historical Fiction
Started February 1st
Ended: February 4th
I chose this book at the school library
summary: This book is about a fourteen-year-old Manjiro, a shipwrecked boy, rescued from pirates, and brought to America. This was the late 1800s, even before Japan was cut off from outside world, until Manjiro returned home and swayed the shogun to open the country to diplomacy.

Based off a true story! Manjiro is an actual person who did important things in order to create a relationship between Japan and America (leading to relationships with other countries).

Margi Preus does a fantastic job with this book! Before reading this, I didn't know much about the struggles the Japanese faced in America or what Japan was like during the time this story takes place. This is a fantastic book that I wholeheartedly recommend.
