The continuation of Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerras acclaimed VERTIGO series Y: THE LAST MAN brings to vivid life the age-old speculation: What would really happen to the last man on Earth? In 2002, the world changes forever. Every man, every boy, every mammal with a Y chromosome everywhere on Earth suddenly collapses and dies. With the loss of nearly half the planets population, the gears of society grind to a halt, and a world of women are left to pick up the pieces and try to keep civilization from collapsing entirely. The gendercide, however, is not absolutely complete. For some unknown reason, one young man named Yorick Brown and his pet male monkey, Ampersand, are spared. Overnight, this anonymous twenty-something becomes the most important person on the planetthe key, it is hoped, to unlocking the secret of the mysterious sex-specific plague. For Yorick himself, the most important person on the planet has been agonizingly out of reach. But now, after three long years and 10,000 arduous miles, the last man is closing in on the truth about his lost fianc?eand the shocking facts behind his own survival. Collects Y: THE LAST MAN #37-48

As with other volumes, I could sum this up by saying it was a LOT. But whether it's exposure to the previous books in the series, or a recent read of a Sandman book, it didn't seem as violent or depressing as previous entries, but was absolutely stuffed with plot and action. Considering the next book of the deluxe collected editions is the last one, I guess that makes sense. 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 I have no idea how Vaughan and crew are going to tie up all the loose ends in a satisfactory manner, and yet at the same time, it feels like if the protagonists accomplish a fairly simple set of goals they've had since the beginning, without running into yet more obstacles, it could actually wrap up pretty easily? Not sure what that says about the series as a whole...I'll hold off on final judgement 'til the finale. ⚠️mention of miscarriage 10mo

Things are getting complicated, threads are being untangled & secrets are spilling. The challenge with a series like this is always to say something without saying too much. Yorick is a great character, the secondary characters equally good. The worldbuilding is great as is the investigation of how a world once dominated by men & now devoid of them would function. A fantastic story which I will finish first thing in the morning. Must rest up.😴

Mehso-so

All the volumes have been great - until this. This volume drags and drags. It's too focused on going into back stories on every characters - even minor characters. The writing is also not as sharp and witty as previous. Hope they have fixed all this for the final volume.

Same issues as the earlier volumes. This one bordered more on misogyny though, many words that I don't think women would use on each other on a regular basis. More what men would call women. And, even though at least three years have passed in this world, Yorick hasn't grown up at all.

Regardless, one more deluxe volume. I'm ready to wrap the series up.
