Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine
Way to the Spring: Life and Death in Palestine | Ben Ehrenreich
From an award-winning journalist, a brave and necessary immersion into the everyday struggles of Palestinian life Over the past three years, American writer Ben Ehrenreich has been traveling to and living in the West Bank, staying with Palestinian families in its largest cities and its smallest villages.Along the way he has written major stories for American outlets, including a remarkable"New York Times Magazine"cover story. Now comes the powerful new work that has always been his ultimate goal, "The Way to the Spring." We are familiar with brave journalists who travel to bleak or war-torn placeson a mission to listen and understand, to gather the stories ofpeople suffering from extremes of oppression and want: KatherineBoo, Ryszard Kapu ci ski, Ted Conover, and PhilipGourevitch among them. Palestine is, by any measure, whatever one's politics, one such place. Ruled by the Israeli military, set upon and harassed constantly by Israeli settlers who admit unapologetically to wanting to drive them from the land, forced to negotiate an ever more elaborate and more suffocating series of fences, checkpoints, and barriers that have sundered home from field, home from home, this is a population whose living conditions are unique, and indeed hard to imagine. In a great act of bravery, empathy and understanding, Ben Ehrenreich, by placing us in the footsteps of ordinary Palestinians and telling their story with surpassing literary power and grace, makes it impossible for us to turn away."

I need your help please Littens! After a rather heated discussion at a party about the Israel -Palestine conflict, I realized I just don't know enough to give an informed opinion. I'd like to read some books on the subject, including some that go over the ancient history of the region. Hoping for a mix of research and first-person accounts. I picked these up from the library to start. Do you have any more recommendations for me? Thx for the help!

Alicia I recommend this graphic novel. This is also an issue I want to be more well read on. My brother lives in Israel and is an ardent Zionist so his perspective is quite skewed. It's a complicated issue with many sides so that means- books help! 8y
ReadingsByTheC @Alicia Thank you so much! This looks great. 8y
Yellowpigeon I've read this one. It's extremely dense but very thorough. I learned a lot but I love history. 8y

drokka I wrote a paper about women in times of conflict and ended up reading up a lot on this area. I'll review my reading list for that and get back to you on it tomorrow. 8y

RealLifeReading I haven't read this yet but keep meaning to, it's written by a Palestinian doctor who's three daughters were killed during an Israeli incursion 8y
ReadingsByTheC @RealLifeReading This sounds heartbreaking but very necessary. Thank you for recommending. 8y
drokka I haven't forgotten about this, I just seem to have misplaced my thumb drives. If I recall any of the writers, I'll post them as well. 8y
ReadingsByTheC @drokka No worries. Thank you for checking. 8y

Some of my post-election goals were to get better acquainted with the world, the situation we're in, and of course, supporting real news and real journalism. This book was great on all fronts - human, engaging, informative, empathetic. Highly recommended for anyone with a stake in or interest with Palestine.

ReadingEnvy I'm thinking of reading books from unrecognized places in 2017 so this goes on my pile! 8y
katrrosee @ReadingEnvy Be sure to check back in and let me know what you think! :) 8y
Libby1 Wonderful goals. I'm looking out for good news, trying to be more informed about some of the missions and charities I support. I was reading yesterday about vaccination programmes in third world countries. ❤️ 8y
katrrosee @Libby1 I love your goals as well! 8y
