This is Book #2 on the middle/junior 2019 Reading Olympics booklist. It is the story of Helmuth Hubener, the youngest boy who was sentenced to death by the Nazis in World War II. While the young boy waits in prison this story is told in flashbacks of his life. This is another heart wrenching story that you will never forget! 📚

Absolutely broken-hearted about the ending but it's the truth of what happened during #WW2. The German Nazis are an example to the world of what not to do and in hating diversity, they refused to acknowledge the strengths in differences. It's difficult to read and know that this was based off a true story, but it's a wonderful reminder of our history that shouldn't be repeated. #nazis #hitleryouth #theboywhodared

In a strong voice, he prays, "Lord, give us peace, break the yoke of the Nazi butchers, make us free."

"You'd better watch what you say in public," whispers Rudi.

"I speak the truth," says Brother Worbs.

I just started today and found this is disturbing just like The Man in the High Castle (the Amazon prime series). I always think it's strange to read about the way that Nazis were back in the 1940s and earlier, and I think it's terrifying just how authoritarian, xenophobic, and white supremacist they are. The experiences in the book are incredibly vivid and heartbreaking.

A heartbreaking story that‘s all the more important in times when young people are constantly exposed to political rhetoric (from all sides). The narrative is told partially through flashbacks, which I found a little difficult to follow on audio, so this might be better suited for print. I know a few middle grade readers who love historical fiction and I'll be recommending this to them.

A quick read with some truly terrifying parallels to some of the things being said during this election campaigning. I was gripped from page one.

One of my favorite books about the Holocaust. This is a fictional account of a brave young man's story. The author uncovered the story while doing research for her non-fiction book, Hitler Youth:Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow.
