Chasing Lucky | Jenn Bennett

In this coming-of-age romance perfect for fans of Jenny Han and Sarah Dessen, a rule-abiding teen embraces her more rebellious side while falling for her ex-boyfriends arch-nemesis. Josie Saint-Martin is well-versed in the art of concealment. Bullied as a child, shes spent most of her life with her single mother, moving from city to city, covering up what she doesnt want others to see, comfortable behind the lens of her favorite vintage camera . . .until Josies grandmother dies and they return to her mothers historical New England hometown to run the family bookstore. There, Josie pulls off the ultimate camouflage: dating Adrian, the Harvard-bound son of the most influential man in town. But her smokescreen is blown when Adrian breaks up with her during his high school graduation party, and Josies poorly executed act of revenge lands her big-time troublejail alongside the last person shed want to share a mugshot with: the mysterious and brooding son of the boat mechanic next door, Lucky Karras. Forced to spend the summer together in mandatory community service, Josie and Lucky become the talk of their coastal townshamed, trolled, and publicly disgraced. The weird thing is, Josie starts to not mind, because the pair have more in common than she once thought. A lot more. But during a summer of secrets, in a town built on gossip, everything rises to the surface. Can Josie and Lucky swim past these obstacles, or will they both go down together?

I really needed that. A romance with just enough substance, somewhat predictable but not boilerplate… A palate cleanser from the heavier or more literary things I‘ve been reading. Plus, I just always love Bennett‘s books…. And that makes a #bingo for me this month! #bookspinbingo #readmyowndamnbooks

⭐️⭐️💫This was…fine? To be fair, I don‘t love stories about small town bullying gossips or family secrets, and that‘s pretty much all this book was, so a lot of this is probably just personal preference. I do think Bennett is a compelling writer who captures teens pretty realistically, which I appreciate. I read her Alex, Approximately & remember really enjoying it. So I think she‘s an author I‘d recommend for this genre, just not this book.

Hopping in a little late on this one, but I'm posing favorite reads of 2020 (basically from each month). We read I'm Not Dying With You Tonight for book club in January and it made for a great discussion, February brought the vampire fun with The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires (love Grady Hendrix always!), and March brought me a new Jenn Bennett novel (which actually published last month) to love! #12Booksof2020 @Andrew65

Last year I was enchanted by Jenn Bennett's book Serious Moonlight, and while I was sure I would like her new book, I thought there was no way I could love it as much or even more. But I did! I loved Josie's crazy cursed family, and Lucky's crazy huge family, the small town charm and gossip mill (well, didn't love the gossip mill, but it is legit small town), the bookstore, and every word in between the beginning and end.

Stacked for next year along with The Lady Rogue. I'm already on my 4th Jenn Bennett novel, Serious Moonlight. Not really my top pick but I enjoyed Alex, Approximately, The Anatomical Shape of the Heart and Starry Eyes in that order. Hopefully, Chasing Lucky is better. Releases April 2020.
