Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil
Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil: The Life, Legacy, and Love of My Son Michael Brown | Lezley McSpadden
The revelatory memoir of Lezley McSpaddenthe mother of Michael Brown, the African-American teenager killed by the police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri on August 9, 2014sheds light on one of the landmark events in recent history. I wasnt there when Mike Mike was shot. I didnt see him fall or take his last breath, but as his mother, I do know one thing better than anyone, and thats how to tell my sons story, and the journey we shared together as mother and son." Lezley McSpadden When Michael Orlandus Darrion Brown was born, he was adored and doted on by his aunts, uncles, grandparents, his father, and most of all by his sixteen-year-old mother, who nicknamed him Mike Mike. McSpadden never imagined that her sons name would inspire the resounding chants of protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, and ignite the global conversation about the disparities in the American policing system. In Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil, McSpadden picks up the pieces of the tragedy that shook her life and the country to their core and reveals the unforgettable story of her life, her son, and their truth. Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil is a riveting family memoir about the journey of a young woman, triumphing over insurmountable obstacles, and learning to become a good mother. With brutal honesty, McSpadden brings us inside her experiences being raised by a hardworking, single mother; her pregnancy at age fifteen and the painful subsequent decision to drop out of school to support her son; how she survived domestic abuse; and her unwavering commitment to raising four strong and healthy children, even if it meant doing so on her own. McSpadden writes passionately about the hours, days, and months after her son was shot to death by Officer Darren Wilson, recounting her time on the ground with peaceful protestors, how she was treated by police and city officials, and how she felt in the gut-wrenching moment when the grand jury announced it would not indict the man who had killed her son. After the system failed to deliver justice to Michael Brown, McSpadden and thousands of others across America took it upon themselves to carry on his legacy in the fight against injustice and racism. Tell the Truth & Shame the Devil is a portrait of our time, an urgent call to action, and a moving testament to the undying bond between mothers and sons.

So thankful to Lesley McSpadden for sharing her Mike Mike with us. Her loss is unfathomable, and hearing in her own words the backlash that came after her son, Michael Brown, was brutally gunned down by a white police officer, shook me to my core. She is an inspiration.

I mostly read this on audio and the reader was so good I thought she might actually be Lezley McSpadden. It‘s written in vernacular which is appropriate and was enjoyable. My heart goes out to Mike Brown‘s family, but especially to his mother. I am so so sorry and angry that people are still having to deal with this kind of thing.

Perfect for today's prompt for #truths. Lesley McSpadden has been doing amazing work after the tragic, disgraceful murder of her son Michael Brown. I haven't read this whole book yet. It's a tough read. But it's so important to hear her perspective on the event that sparked Ferguson and led to the national movement of #BlackLivesMatter. If only she didn't have to write this book. 💔 #maybookflowers

My husband loves his truck more than me - which leads to convos such as these: Me: "So the library is going to be closed until Tuesday, they have my hold in and I don't have any gas in my car and I don't feel like going to the gas station. Can I take your truck?"
Husband: "Don't bother coming home if you wreck it..."

AnnaDesourdy This sounds eerily similar to my husband 😂 8y
DGRachel As a Mopar Girl, I can see myself uttering your husband's words. 😂 8y
Vexingcircumstance My husband and I have the opposite of normal taste in cars. He likes sports cars or (oddly) the giant old cars like Crown Victorias. I like trucks and SUVs. I would be the one worried about my truck. Lol. Although one reason I like trucks and SUVs is that they don't get damaged badly in most car accidents. 8y

Jhullie I wouldn't even ask, my hubby has yet to let me drive his precious 😆 (edited) 8y
saresmoore Hahahaha! I never feel quite so small and yet so powerful as when driving a big truck. 8y
LauraBeth @AnnaDesourdyAuthor I can relate 😂 8y
LauraBeth @DGRachel he's had that truck since spring 2015. I've driven it three times 😂 8y
LauraBeth @Vexingcircumstance I like trucks but since I never drive them, I feel like I'm steering a 747 😀 8y
LauraBeth @Jhullie it was a big ask - but I needed to get to the library 😂 8y
LauraBeth @saresmoore I know exactly what you mean 😀 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders Hahaha!! That's how it goes on our house too - the joke being he loves his truck more than he loves us! 😂 8y
Megabooks 😳😳😳😂 8y
lamaman2boys My husband is the same! 😂 luckily I hate driving it (though for an emergency library trip I would!) 8y
Bookzombie I literally LOLed! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Oooooo! You coulda been towed. Did he check for scratches? ??? I think all men are like that about their vehicles. But when I brought my new one home, first thing he did was reach through the window and start pushing buttons -- talkin' 'bout, "What's this?" I was like, "If you don't know what it is, don't be pushin' the buttons!" 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Ooooo! Next time, tell him you forgot he didn't have an EZ-Tag; and you used that lane on the toll road. (I know. I'm bad.). 8y
Blueberry My husband had no choice when # 2 son needed a car to drive to school. Son drove my car and I drove hubby's truck. He works 45 miles away and needs to drive economical Prius to work. Yes, he looks for scratches. 8y
LauraBeth @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I've yet to figure out what the truck does that's so great 🙄 8y
LauraBeth @lamaman2boys I don't like driving it either! It's like I'm driving the titanic 😀 8y
LauraBeth @Donna_sBookMinute 😂😂 yes, he checked for scratches! Sadly, once I had an ez tag and it was tied to my debit card and set to automatically withdraw funds when the balance got low. I lost my debit card and cancelled it, not realizing I neglected to put new debit card info for ez tag. So I'm using the ez pass lane like crazy - everyday - til a bill for $3,000 shows up! $3,000 - so my ez tag privileges have been revoked 😬 8y
Donna_sBookMinute $3000⁉️ Ouch‼️ I loved driving my son's truck. I bought him a single-cab F150 when he was a senior. For years he didn't know I chose that to keep him from driving around with a car full of friends -- only room for one passenger. (edited) 8y
LauraBeth @Donna_sBookMinute this is a brilliant plan! I may have to adopt it for my daughter. Have you seen those commercials for Verizon Hum? I'll be the parent that gets that 😀 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Seems I vaguely recall a new Verizon commercial. I'll probably start seeing it all the time now. 😊 Yep we gotta do what we gotta do to protect our kiddies. 8y
lamaman2boys @Donna_sBookMinute We saw the commercial for the Hum yesterday & my son (8) said he would never do that stuff because he wouldn't want to miss math! 😂 8y

This was a difficult read, from Lezley's struggles as a teenage single mother & survivor of domestic abuse to the highly publicized death of her son & its aftermath: never getting justice or learning the truth. Because with only 1 person left alive to tell the story, we can't ever know the truth. But Michael Brown's death was a catalyst for body cameras, and while they haven't changed police behavior, they have shown it—something Lezley never got.
