The Measure of a Lady
The Measure of a Lady: A Novel | Deeanne Gist
5 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
Rachel van Buren arrives in Gold Rush San Francisco with two wishes: to protect her younger siblings and to return east as soon as possible. Both goals prove more difficult than she could imagine as her brother and sister are lured by the city's dangerous freedom and a missionary-turned-gambler stakes a claim on her heart. Rachel won't give up without a fight though, and soon all will learn an eloquent but humorous lesson about what truly makes a lady. Speak Politely. Even when you're the only respectable woman around, protesting the decadence of a city lost to gold fever. Dress Modestly. Wear your sunbonnet at all times. Ensure nobody sees your work boots muddied by the San Francisco streets. Remain Devoted to Family. Protect your siblings from the lures of the city, even against their wishes. Stand Above Reproach. Most difficult when a wonderful man turns out to be a saloon owner. Rise Above Temptation. No, not even just a little kiss.... When these rules become increasingly difficult to uphold, can Rachel Van Buren remain a beacon of virtue in a city of vice?

Anyone have any tips for getting stickers off of books? This one must have been on here a long time, and it is being very difficult!

rubyslippersreads I‘ve had some luck loosening them with a hairdryer, but it doesn‘t always get off all the residue. 😠 5y
Karisa @rubyslippersreads Yep, warming sticker up with a hairdryer to gently pull off is what I use too. 5y
smilingshelves @rubyslippersreads @Karisa Interesting idea. I never would have thought of that! 5y

Aims42 You could try “Goo Off”, I‘ve had good luck using that with a q-tip 5y
Smarkies Goo off has worked for me. Just be careful how much you put on as you don't want an oily patch there after. 5y
BucklingBookshelves Hair dryer definitely helps! As for the residue, I‘ve had luck with rubbing alcohol or lemon essential oil. The oil I‘ve found works really well on stubborn stickers, just make sure it‘s only used in a glossy cover, not paper or cloth or it‘ll leave a mark. I use it a lot when I‘m trying to clean up a library discard book I bought. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
smilingshelves @Aims42 @Smarkies Thanks for the idea! I'll have to see if we have any Goo Off in the house. 😊 5y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Thanks for the tips. I'll give those a try. Thankfully it is a glossy cover! 5y

Review:
An amazing book set in 1849 San Francisco when 6 burnings occured while George Washington was President.

I loved how the author included actual facts into the story!!

Definitely not a fan of stickers- especially the ones that won't come off. #BookishPetPeeve #MarchIntoReading

GypsyKat Yes! Can't stand stickers on books! 8y
HippieChickHomeschool The ones that don't come off, or leave stickiness behind are the worst! 8y
Sace Egads that's awful. 8y
