Mexican Hooker #1
Mexican Hooker #1: And Other Roles Since the Revolution | Carmen Aguirre
9 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Carmen Aguirre has lived many lives, all of them to the full. At age six she was a Chilean refugee adjusting to life as a Latina in North America. At eighteen she was a revolutionary dissident married to a generous-hearted man she couldn't fully love. In her early twenties she fought to find her voice as an actress and to break away from the stereotypical roles thrust upon her--Housekeeper, Hotel Maid, Mexican Hooker #1--all the while navigating the complex paths of lust and heartbreak. As she grew in her career, Aguirre became a writer, a director, an actress, and then a mother, but alongside her many multi-faceted identities was another that was unbearable to embrace yet impossible to escape; that of the thirteen-year-old girl attacked by one of Canada's most feared rapists. Thirty-three years after the assault, Aguirre decided it was time to meet the man who changed her life. Fierce, funny and enlightening, Aguirre interweaves her account of overcoming the attack that shook her world with a host of stories of life and love. From her passionate but explosive relationship with a gorgeous Argentinian basketball player to the all-consuming days at drama school in Vancouver; from the end of the Chilean revolutionary dream to life among the Chicano theatre scene of Los Angeles; from the child who was made the victim of a terrible crime to the artist who found the courage to confront her assailant, Aguirre tells a story of strength and survival that will leave you speechless.

I had quite a few things I wanted to do on Sunday afternoon, but I sat down to read just a chapter or two more of MEXICAN HOOKER #1 and that was it. I couldn't even think of doing anything else until I'd finished.

Aguirre is one hell of a writer. She twists time, delves deep, and confronts hard truths as she crafts a deeply personal account of the trauma she's lived through both as a rape survivor and as a revolutionary. She blew me away.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds really good. 7y
xicanti @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it's amazing. There's also a huge theatrical component because she's a professional theatre artist. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @xicanti Already added it to my Goodreads account so I wouldn‘t lose track of it in the huge want-to-read mental list! 😉 7y

I made a big Saturday breakfast to fortify me against the snow-shovelling I've gotta do this morning. Boo, snow. Boooooooooooo. #bookandbreakfast

Kaye Your breakfast looks tasty. It‘s pouring rain here. Grey and wet. At least we don‘t have to shovel anything. 7y
xicanti @Kaye our rain's set to return next week. I almost wish it'd come today so it could wash away all the snow. 7y

I'm FRUSTRATED tonight, partly because there's a snowstorm here and partly because I finished a most unsatisfying novel this morning, so I'm gonna drown my sorrows in books. I've been meaning to start MEXICAN HOOKER #1 since way back in early December, and it feels good to finally sink into it. I'm already 65 pages in; a way better pace than I managed with bloody SPINDLE'S END.

Today I roamed the streets in search of books and was lucky enough to find a well-stocked Little Free Library! I exchanged DISHING THE DIRT by M.C. Beaton for MEXICAN HOOKER #1 by Carmen Aguirre.

An intense read but worth it. The title is a reference to the author who had aspirations to be an actor but was told as a Latina she'd only be cast as a hooker or hotel staff 😠 She is a sexual assault survivor & a part of the resistance during the reign of Pinochet in Chile. Descriptions of resistance activities are hard to follow but her ways of dealing with her sexual assault were brave and inspirational. A very strong woman!
