This was my first book finished for this year. (I haven't posted any reviews on litsy yet this year, so I'm trying to catch up! I have fallen down a Storygraph rabbit hole.) This was a very dark fabulist novella about a teen girl and her father healing the town in their mysterious (and horrific) way. Its more fully about what we will give up to feel a sense of belonging, the sacrifices we make for love, and what love means.

TW: incest

This was a very bizarre book. It was a little tough to follow at times, but I was glad I gave it a shot. I like being exposed to different types of books.

So odd but I kinda liked it. It gave me the same feeling as an old nursery rhyme, how you enjoy it but when you are done singing you are left thinking “wait did she really swallow a fly and if she might die why are we enjoying this?”

At first I was intrigued by the beautiful cover and the book's premise. But the more I read, the more the story lost me. Until, in the end, I really didn't know what to do with this plot and what this book wanted to tell me. Maybe I just missed the whole message, but I really don't get it... 🤷‍♀️

This was short and a good story but ultimately just not my favorite. The cover is beautiful.

So far this is a strange little read. Do you ever start reading a book and wonder why/how it ended up on your TBR stack? 🤔

This was so freaking weird! Did I enjoy it? Heck yah! Could I even try to explain how or what this is about? Not coherently. And honestly that's OK (to me). The writing was good, the characters were fascinating, and the story was odd and complex. Highly recommend!

I listened to this on audio, and I have to say the narrators were amazing. They spoke with an accent that was both soothing and atmospheric to the story. I like the idea of this book, and the writing is beautiful, I just don‘t understand the point of the book or what I‘m supposed to get out of it. It‘s a cool concept but I think I‘m just missing the bigger picture on this one.

Deeply creepy and unsettling. It‘s easy to judge the character of another human, but this book challenged such judgment of a supernatural healer as things with her lover go awry. This is one of those books where the reader is given just enough details to put together the picture themselves, which I love, but others do not. That made it slightly challenging in audio, but I would read this again in print.

April Round up part 1: Finally back in my reading grove. I loved Follow Me to Ground and The Drifting Classroom from this bunch. Only disappointment was Acid For the Children which I don‘t understand why it exists.

I‘m almost finished all my holds I took out before the libraries shut down, which means I‘ll have to dig into my TBR pile here at home very soon. Needed a break between my previous fantasy read before I dipped into this one. Hope it‘s a good one!

ChaoticMissAdventures I liked it! Incredibly quick and odd, and very atmospheric. 5y
Godpants @ChaoticMissAdventures I just read it in one sitting! 5y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Godpants totally! Super quick, which I always want to feel guilty about because I know the writer spent so much time and energy on it! 5y

Book 37
I listened to this short, fantasy-like novel about a not-quite-human daughter and her father who cure sick people by putting them to sleep, breaking them open, and healing them. It's a weird story and not really my style.

This book is strange. I woke up the morning after I finished it and thought about it, realizing I did not grasp the ending and went back to reread it. Now I get it. A dark and magical book. Slight, as books go, but a heavy story. Magic, incest, a touch of horror. Simply gorgeous cover. #fantasticstrangelingsbookclub

This is an odd one as we knew it would be. But almost to quick of a read for what it is. Feels like it should have been a short story or a novel. The 200 pages just doesn't feel right. The end was a bit erratic and it makes me think I need to re-read in order to fully get it, maybe after a second read it will be a pick. But No time for that anytime soon.
It was incredibly inventive and original though and I would recommend to most.

1st reaction: WTF did I just read?. This book is creepy, dark, & seriously weird. The layout was unique with writing that's oddly both atmospheric & limited in scope. The narrative is flowing & beautiful in it's own dark way. I enjoyed all of this, but the ending left me confused & feeling like I ended on a cliffhanger. Regardless...I will admit that it is sticking with me hard and I look forward to seeing what Rainsford's next novel has in store.

Wow is this book great! Weird, minimum storytelling about a romance surrounded by healers who heal by reaching inside of people and every now and then burying their cures. You will need to like weird storytelling to enjoy this one. It is a tiny book too, but I loved it.

I LOVE this cover. Jenny Lawson's first pick for her bookclub - So you know it will be a bit odd.
Started listening to this on my way to work this AM. Too soon to tell if I will like it, but it is super short.

This was such a strange little book and unlike anything I‘ve read before - even in its structure. Probably not for anyone, but if you‘re a fan of fantasy and magical realism check it out. It‘s really beautifully written, throws you into the world without explanation (which I appreciate), and leaves the reader with an unsettled feeling. Irish author, just now being published in the states.

Thanks, #NetGalley, for this quick and very different read! Hard to categorize, this novel skirts the border of literary fiction and magical realism with Ada and her father curing folks at the outskirts of town. More than human, this is also Ada‘s grappling with her own nature- this is the type of book that demands to be discussed and would be great for a book club!

This was such a strange little book, however, it is one that I think I want to read at least one more time, as I think there is a lot to unpack here.

Well, that was quite different! First off the cover was stunning and I loved it, but it was an odd little story and not for everyone. The writing was wonderful and I liked the concept but I never got 100% on-board. Thank you, #netgalley for a chance to read this ARC.
