YA historical fiction with two main characters: Frankie is a young woman growing up in an orphanage after her father decided he didn‘t want to raise her and her siblings. Pearl is a ghost who often visits the orphanage, as well as other Chicago locations.

Takes place during WWII, and all of the young men are conscripted at 18, many of them never coming home.

I liked both storylines and this different angle on WWII historical fiction.

Gissy I liked this one two. I like the author‘s writing style. 2y

story is narrated by ghost that‘s makes it unique n interesting. The MC Frankie is a orphan girl ( brought up in orphanage despite having parents). The story revolves around her, portraying her suffering, love- loss, war , financial crisis & family life. In between ghost narrates her own story, initially it felt like a distraction but ok in the long read. It‘s an emotional read, ask many questions about feminism beyond time. 4🌟 #YAbuddyread #YA

Blackink_WhitePaper Thanks to @megnews I couldn‘t have discovered this book otherwise. 4y

Any other thoughts on the book? #YABuddyRead

mrp27 I also thought all the fairy tales were a distraction to the story. Combine that with the ghosts and it was too much. 4y
BarbaraJean Thank you for tagging me! Unfortunately this reading week kind of kicked my butt, and I haven't even started the book yet. 😔 I guess this is what happens when I have three book discussions fall on the same weekend! I'm hoping to read this in the coming week, and I'll come back to the questions when I finish. 4y
megnews @BarbaraJean no problem! I‘ll check back. 4y

megnews I always say I‘m thankful to be born into the time I was, with modern conveniences. I feel like I wouldn‘t fare well. 4y
sblbooks Not well! I'm sure as a disabled person, I would have been left in an Asylum somewhere. I like to read about other times, and it would be interesting to go as an observer only. 4y
megnews @sblbooks yes, my love of historical fiction started with Little House in the Prairie but I knew even as a kid I wouldn‘t want to live through those hardships. 4y

Deblovestoread I wouldn‘t have done well, either. Sister George would not have been amused. @sblbooks I can‘t imagine being a disabled woman back then. 4y
sblbooks @Kdgordon88 I don't think Sister George would be amused with any of us from this era. I'm very thankful I was born when I was. 4y
mrp27 I would not have faired well with all the societal constraints placed upon women. I also would not have done well without a family unit. Those were tough times for everyone. I can‘t imagine all the suffering from the war either. 4y
Butterfinger I feel like my family would have had me institutionalized. 4y
JaclynW I love historical fiction but I can usually never imagine myself doing that well in any scenario I read about. Haha! There are always parts that are intriguing. But. Could I LIVE there for an extended time?? No! We just went to a pioneer museum with my daughter's school and my daughter thought it would be so much fun to live during pioneer times. Then she thought about it for a minutes and said maybe not so much in the winter. Ha! Truth! 4y

WHAT A RIDE!!!! Set during WWII at an orphanage, a ghost narrates Frankie's life. The grit of the theme, which is women will be punished for loving too much, has completely enraged me. I want to bust out of my skin when I feel helpless because of a man. Just an incredible book.

If you like Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in Ghost, this may be a book for you.

I read this always hoping for the best for Pearl, a very interesting narrator and Frankie a sweet soul forced to be tough in this young adult novel set during WWII.

My audiobook came in on Libby just in time for a morning audiowalk. 3.38 miles during one of the two most beautiful times of the day in San Diego. I got a refreshing view of the canyon, but the photo doesn't capture it so here's a flower along my route. I've been afraid to leave the house, but this felt really good. I wore my mask the whole way and people were good about social distancing but still friendly.

YA historical fiction at it's best! This might be the only book I can recall reading in which the first person narrative is from a ghost. As the story unfolds, the parallels between Frankie an orphan...sort of, abandoned for sure and Pearl (the ghost) are the path leading to freedom for both girls. Set in WWII era Chicago, this story infuses humor, (I laughed out loud) with frustrating heartache. I will read this author again!
