This is less a novel than a series of tales, myths & legends about an ancient & vast empire full of mystery & beauty & strangeness. If that sort of baroque mythos appeals to you, you‘ll love it. As for me, I‘m all about the world building, so I enjoyed wandering & getting lost in this world.

Mogoeg Le Guin is an able translator - the writing is beautiful - I imagine reading it in Spanish is an amazing experience. 4y

After a pretty steady diet of "quick reads" lately, it's been a nice change of pace (though perhaps a little frustrating at first ?) to be forced to slow down and appreciate setting and language. Curious to see where this is going!

Onto bedtime reading...

I didn't manage to get much readin' did this weekend, but I did throw a book club party on a rooftop with a stellar view. We played book jeopardy and ate hummus. It was a real rager.

I wanted to love this book so much, Latin American fiction, translated by LeGuin? But for some reason I just couldn't get into it. If you are big into fantasy, give it a shot, might be up your alley!

And I knew that men don't think. No, don't laugh. They don't think. Now and then one of them thinks, sure, and says what he thought, or writes it down, and that's so unusual that nobody forgets it.
