British Nicola Sutcliff took a teaching job at the women‘s university in Riyadh, made an effort to speak to local women to avoid falling into a Western bubble while she was there, and ended up travelling the country, compiling a book of interviews with Saudi women.
In addition to marriage, gender roles and guardianship, the women discuss health, education, pop culture, activism & 👇🏻
It‘s not a perfect read. The women are talking to a Westerner, so naturally there‘s quite a heavy focus on differences between the kingdom and the West, no matter whether they perceive them as positive or negative. It can feel a little lengthy and repetitive at times. I also had a bit of an issue with the stark labelling 👇🏻 (edited) 4y
Overall, though, I found this to be such an interesting read. I loved hearing such a range of voices and opinions from one country, and the portraits by Merieme Mesfioui really added to the text.
