The Art of Dying | Ambrose Parry
33 posts | 16 read | 35 to read
Edinburgh, 1850. Despite being at the forefront of modern medicine, hordes of patients are dying all across the city, with doctors finding their remedies powerless. But it is not just the deaths that dismay the esteemed Dr James Simpson - a whispering campaign seeks to blame him for the death of a patient in suspicious circumstances. Simpson's protg Will Raven and former housemaid Sarah Fisher are determined to clear their patron's name. But with Raven battling against the dark side of his own nature, and Sarah endeavouring to expand her own medical knowledge beyond what society deems acceptable for a woman, the pair struggle to understand the cause of the deaths. Will and Sarah must unite and plunge into Edinburgh's deadliest streets to clear Simpson's name. But soon they discover that the true cause of these deaths has evaded suspicion purely because it is so unthinkable.

A nurse's patients are dying - but is she unwittingly spreading disease or is she a serial killer?

A good mystery set in a time when medical practitioners had noticed a better survival rate if they washed their hands between patients but didn't know why.

Didn't expect that I would like it as much as the 1st due to the 1st having a really good balance on well everything. Ended liking it better due to the main characters doing some serious growth and getting insight into a killers mind. Didn't know most of the events were based on VERY real ones til the end which is really kool that the authors combined that into a nice package. Now onto the 3rd and final one!

An excellent second book. Raven, the main character has many flaws and a dark side but I love him and his partner in detecting continues to grow through adversity in this historical fiction mystery with medicine in the background. @Mitch recommended the books and is right- they are a great read for mystery and medical books.

Mitch So glad you‘re enjoying them. It‘s a shame there is only 3 ( so far!🤞🏼). 3y
Chrissyreadit @Mitch I agree. I hope there will be more. 3y

Ha. My question about disinfectants has been answered within the first chapter. Yeah!

Crazeedi So you learned something new today!! Yay! 3y

julesG @Crazeedi @Nute @Susanita - I was wondering, in my review to the first book in the series, whether the following book(s) might address the topic of disinfectants/antiseptics. This question was answered within the first chapter. 3y
Crazeedi @julesG I just remember how I shivered thinking of how surgery was done before antiseptic procedure and how they resisted implementing 3y

This is a series that has it all - it's smart, well researched and carefully handles issues within the story ( and not as a clunky add-on) at the same time as being a fast paced page turner. The research the authors do in terms of Victorian medical opinions as well as the geography of the city of Edinburgh makes this a wholly immersive, smart, historical mystery.

julesG How did I miss this? I'll put book 1 on my TBR. 3y
Caroline2 Sounds great, I‘ve just stacked the first book too. 😉 3y

There‘s something so comforting about slipping back into the lives of characters you meet in series books - there needs to be a word for it! The English language is both vast and lacking at the same time! 🤣

Cathythoughts There does need to be a word for it !! Good thinking Mitch 👍🏻❤️ 3y

The thing I loved about this second novel was the development of the Sarah character, who I just love. I loved the love story between her and Archie, and I can‘t wait to hear what happens next! Raven continues to be rather a prat (but kind of a sexy prat).

I enjoyed the first in series so decided to continue with this one and am glad I did. Set in 1849 Edinburgh this one follows Will Raven (a young medical student) and Sarah Fisher (a housemaid/doctor‘s assistant) as they investigate a series of random seemingly unconnected deaths throughout the city. Just a word of caution, this series is dark, gritty and unflinching in its depiction of medical maladies/treatments during this time. 4.25/5⭐️

I liked this second book in the series more than the first, mainly because I recalibrated my expectations to “historical fiction that has a mystery in it” rather than “a mystery with historical trappings”.

When people begin dying of an unknown illness, Sarah is the first to believe something darker is causing these deaths. She convinces Will and together they delve deeper and begin to hunt for a killer.

The Art Of Dying is historical crime fiction at its very best, superbly written and full of wonderfully atmospheric descriptions you really get a sense of time and place. It has a dark, twisty plot and well rounded, likeable characters. Brilliant

emmaturi I like this series, I think the next one is out in the summer! 4y

If the first book of this series(The Way of All Flesh) was a romp, this one can only be described as a caper. It's an Edinburgh set historical murder mystery that is just a lot of fun & ridiculously entertaining. The 2 MCs, a budding feminist & a bad boy come good, make a really great team, clashing and bonding and misunderstanding each other all over the place in a satisfyingly frustrating way. The crime is juicy & the denouement gratifying.

I've just sat down with a mug of Beanies coffee (hazelnut & cinnamon flavour - it's delish) and I'm about to start this one. I loved The Way of All Flesh so I'm looking forward to this one - I seem to be on a bit of a historical crime jag at the moment.

Amazing book! Raven and Sarah are back to solve another case amidst the gore of 19c Scottish medicine. And the muck of 1850s Edinburgh, awash with poverty, disease and hypocrisy. I love toothat the authors thank the map digitisation projects at the National Library of Scotland.

Book 2 in the series. It was a really good read with lots of drama and mystery but for me the ending let it down. Without giving too many spoilers it left things a little too open for me. I wanted more from it. That being said I'm hoping theres a possible third book coming. The plot itself was clever and built well. I enjoyed the mystery and the depth it goes into about a womens place in these times. #Netgalley #SummersEndReadathon
