Featuring forthright testimonials by women who are or have been mothers as undergraduates, graduate students, academic staff, administrators, and professors, Mothers in Academia intimately portrays the experiences of women at various stages of motherhood while theoretically and empirically considering the conditions of working motherhood as academic life has become more laborious. As higher learning institutions have moved toward more corporate-based models of teaching, immense structural and cultural changes have transformed women's academic lives and, by extension, their families. Hoping to push reform as well as build recognition and a sense of community, this collection offers several potential solutions for integrating female scholars more wholly into academic life. Essays also reveal the often stark differences between women's encounters with the academy and the disparities among various ranks of women working in academia. Contributorsincluding many women of colorcall attention to tokenism, scarce valuable networks, and the persistent burden to prove academic credentials. They also explore gendered parenting within the contexts of colonialism, racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, ageism, and heterosexism.

Honest Academic Job Listings. So true, it'll make you cry. The history ad (shown) is about my current position to a tee. I am gleefully NOT doing the job they hired me for, by the by.

JacqMac 😂 So true. My husband is an associate professor. Academia is not what it used to be. 5y
tournevis @JacqMac To tell the truth, I don't think it ever really was “what it used to be“, but it's become commercialized and about financial gain for the institution more than for creation of knowledge. It was always about hoarding knowledge from those who can't pay to sit in the chairs, but now it simply is more mercantile than ever. 5y
rachelm Wow this is sooo true lol 5y

Eggs As an adjunct professor, I can relate 5y
tournevis @Eggs I am so sorry. adjuncts are so important and so exploited. It breaks my heart. We finally successfully won that adjuncts could become permanent positions after two years and get benefits. That was just a few years ago. But we have a union here. I know for a fact most US colleges and unis do not. 5y
Eggs @tournevis ❤️👏🏻❤️ 5y
JacqMac @tournevis True. But it would be really nice to have the security of tenure again. It‘s such a rarity in some departments. 5y
tournevis @JacqMac I know. It was hard in the 1990s because departments simply weren't opening positions, but when they did, positions were tenure track. Today, in my department, there is one adjunct or teaching fellow for every professor. 5y

End of project packing. The box, the microfilms, the CDs and three short offscreen piles will go into storage. I also need to take the 12012 photocopies out of the filing cabinet. The shown piles are going to uni for teaching. Now to tackle the project carts, one shown. Oof. #academiclife

I took a huge decision today, with likely repercussions on my career. I have decided to stop trying to make the monograph I've been working on for 10 years work. I've officially stopped working on it. I will be publishing one more article from this research, after which it's shelved for good. It doesn't work. It's dragging me down. I need another monograph to become full professor but it won't be that one. Next project is ago. #academiclife

Tamra It must be a relief to be making a decision on a new direction! 5y
tournevis @Tamra It is, but it's a risk. It takes at least two years to right a book, and before that research. That's at least three years before I can even apply for full professorship. Pushing back everything. 5y
Leftcoastzen Hard decision! Those tomatoes look so yummy! 5y

No reading, and very little @Litsy, no writing fiction this week. And probably the next. I have 19 classes to write. Three done. It's very slow going. Watching art vids to clear my mind in between. Blargh.
