Television: Critical Methods and Applications | Jeremy G. Butler
7 posts | 2 read
Television introduces students to the processes through which television tells stories, presents news, and sells products to its viewers. This accessible and student-friendly text explains how television constructs meaning and encourages readers to incorporate critical thinking into their TV viewing. Television contains hundreds of illustrations from current and classic TV programs, and a companion Web site (www.TVcrit.com) supplements the text with color frame grabs and illustrative video clips. New for this second edition is a chapter discussing television commercials and updated examples from recent television programs. This text examines how videography, acting, lighting, set design, editing, and sound work together to produce the meanings that viewers take away from their television experience, while also providing critical and historical contexts to explain how critical methods have been applied to the medium. Television is intended for courses in television critical studies, and is also suitable for media and screen studies.

I spent Saturday bingeing Christmas-y TV and Movies including every holiday episode of Supestore (I really miss that show) shout out to Hulu for pulling those episodes. Also, Finding Mr Christmas is gonna be a really cute competition.

I have an addiction to television. I spend way too many hours on the couch with my blanket and tv.

TV on or no when you‘re reading? Or are you into music? What about silence?

I can‘t read without the TV on. Right now, it‘s 16 and Pregnant. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

BeansPage 72 Dangerous Animals: Asia 😉 5y
Clwojick I prefer silence, but I can handle music or listening to my husband play video games. But if it‘s a movie or tv show I‘m interested in, I‘ll get too distracted from reading. 5y
jb72 Usually on if I‘m reading during the day before bedtime. Right now I‘m “watching” a variety of YouTube videos while reading...Omar is so much fun to watch in his haunted videos. 5y

Clwojick @TheReadingMermaid I love that whole 72 Most series! Cutest animals was a good one too 🐼🐻🐵🐯🐨🦁 5y
Clwojick @jb72 I‘m a sucker for YouTube trash too. Meaningless, but fun videos. Lately I‘m obsessed with DadVGirls. 5y
jb72 @Clwojick I haven‘t heard of that. I‘m into OmarGoshTV and Chills. I‘m also a sucker for Brad on bon appetit. 5y
Amiable If my husband is watching sports I can read with the TV on. But if it‘s something that might even vaguely attract my attention, I can‘t concentrate with the TV on. 5y
Blaire I didn‘t know that show was still on! I prefer it off but can manage with it on. 5y
Megabooks @Clwojick I always put on shows I‘ve already seen. If I haven‘t seen it, I usually can‘t read with it on! 5y
GripLitGrl I prefer silence but enjoy music sometimes. 5y
Megabooks @jb72 I‘ve never gotten into YouTube. I don‘t know anything about it other than watching music videos. 5y
Megabooks @Amiable Yeah, I can only have on things I‘ve already seen or sports teams I only sort of care about. 5y
Megabooks @Blaire it‘s not! I‘ve purchased a few seasons on Amazon. 5y
Megabooks @GripLitGrl I used to study with music on, but for pleasure reading, I prefer TV. 5y
jb72 @Megabooks I love watching the urban explorers and their scary encounters on YouTube. 5y
OnlyYoo I really got into Lo-fi music this year. It‘s great for studying or reading 5y
Andrew65 Prefer it to be quiet, but can read with some noise. 5y
AmyK1 I can‘t do TV on if it‘s something I‘m interested in watching. If I don‘t care about it I can tune it out. Same with music. But I prefer quiet. 5y
Megabooks @jb72 That‘s interesting!! 5y
Megabooks @OnlyYoo I‘ll have to look up Lo-fi music. I‘ve never heard of it! 5y
Eggbeater Music all the way! I have themes that go with different types of books and I've created book playlists. I am a geek! 5y
Megabooks @Andrew65 @AmyK1 Two votes for quiet!! 5y
Megabooks @Eggbeater That‘s cool!! 5y
xicanti I listen to a lot of music, but I can‘t read while anything with a storyline is on TV. SOMETIMES I can manage to read during sports, but only sometimes. 5y
Blaire @Megabooks 😍 I used to watch it all.the.time and I‘ll still Wikipedia to see what they‘re up to you. 5y
audraelizabeth I do a combo of tv and music. 5y
Soubhiville I prefer silence, but can read over my husband‘s hockey or news, as long as the volume isn‘t too high. 5y
britt_brooke I prefer silence, but can usually tune out loud surroundings (i.e. my family, lol). 5y
8little_paws Reading with the tv on, this is blowing my mind 5y
MemoirsForMe I need the silence or low background noise. I get too distracted. 🙃 5y
Megabooks @xicanti most of my musical knowledge ends around 2010 when I graduated from vet school! When I stopped studying, especially after I started listening to audiobooks while I drive, I just totally lost touch. 5y
Megabooks @Blaire Me too! I follow some of them on Instagram. Even some of the one who didn‘t make it in TM! 5y
Megabooks @Soubhiville Makes sense! 5y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I can‘t tune out people in the room talking like at a doctor‘s office or mechanic. I might as well put in ear buds and listen to an audiobook, but then I couldn‘t hear getting called. 🤔 5y
Megabooks @8little_paws 🤯🤯🤯 5y
Megabooks @UwannaPublishme my tv is pretty turned down. Not at “regular watching volume” but I can hear it enough to follow along. 5y
Reviewsbylola I freaking love 16&P and TM. 🤣🤣🤣 Not while I‘m reading tho. 5y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola Lolololol! It‘s a hard addiction to break! 5y
