The Queens of Animation: The Untold Story of the Women Who Transformed the World of Disney and Made Cinematic History | Nathalia Holt
12 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
From the bestselling author of Rise of the Rocket Girls, the untold story of the women of Walt Disney Studios, who shaped the iconic films that have enthralled generations Behind the beloved animated films of Walt Disney Studios, which have moved and entertained millions of viewers, was an incredibly influential group of women who have slipped under the radar for decades. For the first time, bestselling author Nathalia Holt recounts their dramatic stories, showing how these women infiltrated the all-male domain of Disney's story and animation departments and used early technologies to create the rich artwork and unforgettable storylines that have become part of the American canon. Over the decades-while battling sexism, domestic abuse, and workplace harassment-these women also fought to transform the way female characters are depicted to young audiences. Based on extensive interviews and exclusive access to archival and personal documents, The Queens of Animation reveals the vital contributions these women made to Disney's Golden Age and their continued impact on animated filmmaking, culminating in the record-shattering Frozen, Disney's first female-directed full-length feature film.

I liked this a lot! A heartfelt history of a small group of women who made big and often unappreciated contributions to many classic Disney movies.
It had a lot of details about the technical aspects of animation and how they changed through the years, which I found surprisingly interesting.

KatieDid927 I still need to read this. Glad you liked it! 3y

I listened to this on audio and wow - there‘s a lot I did not know about Disney‘s history. There‘s some shocking stuff in here and also inspiring. So fascinating to see where the company has come from and the huge efforts women had to go to in order to be both recognized and treated fairly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I don‘t read a lot of nonfiction. I almost exclusively stick to novels. Yet, once in a great while, a nonfiction work will captivate me. I am currently LOVING The Queens of Animation right now. It is an extremely fascinating look at the history of women artist within the Walt Disney Studios. I highly recommend it.

A well researched account of women‘s contributions to the Disney empire. Really interesting to see the films they worked on, how the credit system worked, how meetings were run, why certain films got held up, etc. The book also touches on minorities as well. Think this would appeal to anyone interested in women‘s history, the history of film and animation, as well as Disney in general. It touched on a lot of topics without losing focus. Well done.

Random pick from my local library that I ended up loving once I finished it. 💚

This book is well-researched and gives a behind-the-scenes look into the women who helped make Walt Disney successful. Parts of the story frustrated me, reading all the amazing things these women created and yet didn't get credit for, but I'm glad that now their story is being told.

It also checks off Women's Rights for #Nonfiction2020. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds wonderful! And a great one I hadn‘t heard of before! 5y
Addison_Reads @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hope you enjoy it. I hadn't heard of it either, I just saw it on my library shelf and had to read it. It has a lot of great information on it. 5y

Really fascinating - as a long-time Disney fan, I love all the behind the scenes. This is a broadly reaching book that covers the women of the title, but also other racial-minority Disney workers, the history of Disney studios (including financial stuff), how the original animation films were developed, Technicolor, and a shit-ton of other topics. Like the author couldn't decide what to leave out. I skimmed a lot. Still a good read.
