Move Along, Please
Move Along, Please | Mark Mason
2 posts
At 10.41am on a Tuesday morning in September, Mark Mason boards the number 1A bus at Lands End in Cornwall. Forty-six buses and eleven days later he disembarks at John OGroats in Scotland. Move Along Please is his account of that gruelling 1100-mile odyssey; a paint-by-bus-numbers portrait of Britain. Along the way he visits everywhere from the village where the internet enters Britain to the urban sprawl of Birmingham (inspiration for the Two Towers in Lord of the Rings). He samples staples of the British diet from curry to the deep-fried Mars Bar, and uncovers countless fascinating facts about his native land did you know, for example, that Crewe Alexandra football club is named after the wife of Edward VII, that Loch Ness could hold the water from all the lakes in England and Wales, or that there is a village which rejoices in the name Tongue End? Set against the backdrop of 2000 years of history and with a full supporting cast drawn from that most unusual of species, the Great British Public, this is the unmissable story of a man rediscovering his nation in all its idiosyncratic glory.

Cue scene in "As Good as it Gets" when Cuba Gooding Jr. shouts "I hate doing this!"

I love good healthy debate. But seeing as 1) I don't have time to respond to explosions in my comments and 2) Litsy is my 1 little place to share and reflect upon my reading life--I don't want to engage. Opinions are like you know what. Please let me have mine. I see content all the time that I disagree with but I keep scrolling. Please...do the same. Thank you.

DogMomIrene You know Dory in Finding Nemo? “Just keep swimming.” When I see whatever on social that has me doing a double take, I just sing in my head “Just keep scrolling. Just keep scrolling.” That 🐠 mantra has seriously helped my mental health. I see no need to engage and even less reason to read the comments or reactions of the crowd. Hope you‘re enjoying something fabulous right now!😋 4y
bibliobliss @DogMomIrene You are so right and you have the perfect mantra!! 🥴😂 I'll definitely keep Dory's advice in mind!! 4y
Eggs Couldn‘t agree more! I do not need approval for my reading choices or my book reviews 4y

Crazeedi You are so spot on, thank you for saying this. My dad always said if you cant say something nice dont say anything. And I try to follow his advice. I'm following you! My friends just told me about your posts! 4y
bibliobliss @Crazeedi I posted this disclaimer because, while I enjoy a good debate in a safe space, I want Litsy to be for peaceful reading and reflection. I don't expect my fellow bibliophile friends to magically agree with my perspectives but I also don't want to have to defend my opinions or thoughts all the time! It gets exhausting and I'm not on Litsy for that kind of interaction. Nice to make your acquaintance! I'm also following you!! 😉 4y
Crazeedi @Readage I am here for the same reason. I love sharing books and finding books. And having healthy discussions and lively debates! 4y

One of my favorite quotes, which reminds me of Doctor Who when he says he's going home, the long way around.

Without a doubt, one of the worst, if not THE worst, episodes of season one. Just horrible in every way, the situation is silly, the acting is cringe worthy and the conclusion is lame. I'm glad we never saw the Wadi again.

Megabooks Yes, while after reading Isabelle‘s post, I see it in a bit better light, I still find it very silly! I think they just wanted to express how different the Gamma Quadrant species were, but it was a miss. 5y
