A Prayer for Travelers
A Prayer for Travelers: A Novel | Ruchika Tomar
10 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
This daring debut novel propels readers into the world of Penny and Cale, two marginalized young women who forge an intense bond against a constricting backdrop of violence and isolation in Nevada's northern desert. Cale, a bookish loner of mysterious parentage, was abandoned by her mother and raised by her grandfather in a loving, if codependent, household. One pivotal summer her life is upended by the discovery of a devastating secret that irrevocably threatens this formative relationship. Set adrift for the first time in her life, Cale begins waitressing at the local diner, where she reconnects with Penlope Reyes, a charismatic former classmate and all-around hustler. Penny exposes Cale to the complicated reality that exists beyond their small town, and the girls become inseparable until one terrifying act of violence shatters their world. When Penny vanishes without a trace, Cale must set off on a dangerous quest across the desert to find her friend, and discover herself. Told in short, interconnecting chapters, A Prayer for Travelers explores the complicated legacy of the American West and the trauma of female experience.

#readingUSA2019 - 7 more added, now at 32 states. Will carry these over to #readtheUSA2020 to finish the remaining 18 states. Tagged book was for Nevada, the desert town setting dripped with desolation and desperation. Loved it!

Bleak and desolate, with chapters all mixed up (an interesting idea that I liked at first but ultimately felt like a gimmick). Still, I couldn‘t put it down.

Karen.reads @Clwojick you can‘t see the gray hair on his chin in this picture. Or his neck rolls. 😆 Pugs are great! We have had 4. 5y

I really liked the writing style, but I can see why it is a turn off to some. The chapters are numbered but told out of sequence. The novel begins with chapter 30. An depressing coming of age story set in the desert.

This is a tough one to review. I'm giving a straight middle of the road rating because there were parts I really liked and there were reasons I didn't like it that much. (But I still respect the heck out of this book and the author.)

Here is my patchwork review that I will polish up in a bit: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2894260167
