Eyes to the Wind
Eyes to the Wind: A Memoir of Love and Death, Hope and Resistance | Ady Barkan
5 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
In this inspirational and moving memoirreminiscent of When Breath Becomes Air and The Bright Houractivist Ady Barkan explores his life with ALS and how his diagnosis gave him a profound new understanding of his commitment to social justice for all. Ady Barkan loved taking afternoon runs on the California coast and holding his newborn son, Carl. But one day, he noticed a troubling weakness in his hand. At first, he brushed it off as carpal tunnel syndrome, but after a week of neurological exams and two MRIs, he learned the cause of the problem: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. At age 32, Ady was given just three to four years to live. Yet despite the devastating diagnosis, he refused to let his remaining days go to waste. Eyes to the Wind is a rousing memoir featuring intertwining storylines about determination, perseverance, and how to live a life filled with purpose and intention. The first traces Adys battle with ALS: how he turned the initial shock and panic from his diagnosis into a renewed commitment to social justicenot despite his disability but because of it. The second, told in flashbacks, illustrates Adys journey from a goofy political nerd to a prominent figure in the enduring fight for equity and justice who is willing to give [his] last breath to save our democracy (CNN). From one of todays most vocal advocates for social justice, Eyes to the Wind is an evocative and unforgettable memoir about activism, dedication, love, and hope.

In Eyes to the Wind, activist Ady Barkan shares the story of his devastating diagnosis with ALS at only 33, just months after the birth of his son, but also the story of his life and career in political activism. The result is a powerful, moving, and informative memoir, and Bradley Whitford does a beautiful job narrating.

I was introduced to Ady Barkan on the Podcast Pod Save America. Ady is in his early 30‘s living with ALS, and I want to say he is living. He has played a very important role in the political landscape, and this forced him to push on even bigger issues, like healthcare.

4⭐️. For fans of When Breath Becomes Air and Chasing My Cure, this might be your next book to pick up. While it is focused more on his professional life rather than his personal life and fight with ALS, it is still a very interesting read about his inside views of the political events of the last couple of years. #netgalley #arc #reviewathon #EyesToTheWind

This is a beautiful memoir about Ady who is an activist. He discovers he has ALS in his early 30's. This book is his story about continuing to be an activist despite his ALS and also how it progressed and its impact on him and those he loved. I found it hard to stop reading.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me a copy free of charge. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of it.
