Orfeo: A Novel
Orfeo: A Novel | Richard Powers
A Chicago Tribune 'Best Books of 2014' New York Times Bestseller Longlisted for The Man Booker Prize Longlisted for the National Book Award The National Book Awardwinning author of The Echo Maker delivers his most emotionally charged novel to date, inspired by the myth of Orpheus. "If Powers were an American writer of the nineteenth centuryhe'd probably be the Herman Melville of Moby-Dick. His picture is that big," wrote Margaret Atwood (New York Review of Books). Indeed, since his debut in 1985 with Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance, Richard Powers has been astonishing readers with novels that are sweeping in range, dazzling in technique, and rich in their explorations of music, art, literature, and technology. In Orfeo, Powers tells the story of a man journeying into his past as he desperately flees the present. Composer Peter Els opens the door one evening to find the police on his doorstep. His home microbiology labthe latest experiment in his lifelong attempt to find music in surprising patternshas aroused the suspicions of Homeland Security. Panicked by the raid, Els turns fugitive. As an Internet-fueled hysteria erupts, Elsthe "Bioterrorist Bach"pays a final visit to the people he loves, those who shaped his musical journey. Through the help of his ex-wife, his daughter, and his longtime collaborator, Els hatches a plan to turn this disastrous collision with the security state into a work of art that will reawaken its audience to the sounds all around them. The result is a novel that soars in spirit and language by a writer who may be Americas most ambitious novelist (Kevin Berger, San Francisco Chronicle).

"The porous edge between hope and fear." One of the many turns of phrase I had to pause and think on. This novel is so rich with #music references. It may be off-putting to some readers & much was beyond my ability to fully appreciate, but I love his writing. Published in 2014, his mention of a likely pandemic and the inevibility of lab leaks is eerie. Bushwacker & reading at the beach bar on this windy day. #science #bookanddrink #involvesmusic

lynneamch @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @eggs Also have to mention this one for #MarchMagic #involvesmusic as I just watched the first two episodes tonight. Good so far. 2y
Eggs Sounds fascinating 🧐 Great choice. That drink looks delicious 😋 2y
SamAnne Every since Overstory I‘ve wanted to read his backlist. I think next might be Echo Maker. 2y

Mehso-so

I *really* wanted to like this—it was recommended by a friend, and the main character is a musician/composer who attended University of Illinois. I found it overly weird (which I often really like) and disjointed. So, I was disappointed, and I can't recommend it. [waffling between so-so & pan]

This was a phenomenal book - it‘s rare to find a book that expresses the power and beauty of music so well without being able to show you any. Just like the Overstory, this book made me feel caught up in something big and numinous and spiritual, though I preferred Overstory because I thought it was more complex and built to a bigger whole. Just cause this wasn‘t as good as one of the best books I‘ve ever read doesn‘t mean I didn‘t love it though!

arubabookwoman Powers is one of my very favorite contemporary authors. I‘ve read all of his novels, except his first, Three Farmers on the Way to a Dance. 6y
Emilymdxn @arubabookwoman this is my second one by him but I have more reserved in the library! 6y
arubabookwoman My 2 favorites after The Overstory are The Time of Our Singing and The Gold Bug Variations, but I also loved Operation Wandering Soul and Galatea 2.(something)—don‘t remember the exact number). 6y

I need some bookish art right now. School was challenging today, the work day long and not yet finished... And no time for even a tiny Litsy break until now 😱
