Coconut | Kopano Matlwa
An important rumination on youth in modern-day South Africa, this haunting debut novel tells the story of two extraordinary young women who have grown up black in white suburbs and must now struggle to find their identities. The rich and pampered Ofilwe has taken her privileged lifestyle for granted, and must confront her swiftly dwindling sense of culture when her soulless world falls apart. Meanwhile, the hip and sassy Fiks is an ambitious go-getter desperate to leave her vicious past behind for the glossy sophistication of city life, but finds Johannesburg to be more complicated and unforgiving than she expected. These two stories artfully come together to illustrate the weight of history upon a new generation in South Africa.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I‘m blown away by this debut novel. It‘s told in two parts, from the perspective of two different young black women (16-18?) in South Africa. While it follows one day in their lives there are lots of memories of childhood, anecdotes of relatives and interactions with other people. It feels more like vignettes, layers of life and truth. The two girls lives are very different - one wealthy, one poor - but the themes of language, race & ⬇️

Centique ...inequity affect both of them. Matlwa has a unique voice - the girls‘ thoughts and feelings as they navigate their stratified, racist world highlights the wrongness everywhere. Matlwa just presents it as it is without trying to find solutions or explanations. It is beyond a simple explanation. A gift to witness these experiences in her writing - and to learn a little of other lives. (edited) 4y

...jumbo I had spewed out. Each word ended in a shudder, a cringe”

16yo Ofilwe is trying to learn some of the language of her parents. A language hidden in their house as they attempt to be accepted and “successful”. This book is brilliant so far.

Matlwa‘s debut novel follows two South African teenagers through one day of their lives. One is wealthy, the other one poor, their day intersects in a cafe where one it a patron and the other one the waitress.

I thought that Fiks‘ story (the waitress) was much stronger than Ofilwe (the patron), but overall a strong debut.

Not in the @Litsy database.

This book is harsh, raw and heartbreaking. It tells the story of xenophobia in South Africa in a way that is terrifying and sad.

Notafraidofwords It would be cool if @Litsy were to add it! 8y
minkyb Doesn't come out is the US until July. 8y
haanim @minkyb that's probably why. I'm sure they'll add it soon @Notafraidofwords @Litsy 😊 8y

Book is "Period Pain", by Kopano Matlwa, but it isn't in the @Litsy database.

The book I read before this was set in "Gilead" (The Handmaid's Tale), and now this book contains a passage that is referenced in that book. It seems like a natural progression ☺

minkyb Strange coincidence! 8y

Had a bit of a tough day at work. Went to my favourite independent book store in the centre of Cape Town after work to clear my mind. Bought this by South African author Kopano Matlwa. This particular title isn't in the @Litsy database.

Notafraidofwords Maybe @Litsy can add it. It looks cool. 8y
Suzze I don't even see it listed on Goodreads. Now I'm intrigued! 8y
haanim @Suzze it is actually on Goodreads 😊 8y

And isn't it a GORGEOUS book? Divided into two sections: one young black girl who will do anything to fit in with white expectations; and another who is becoming more proud of her blackness.

I'm a little obsessed with book dedications, and this is spot-on. Coconut is a South African book about the complexities of growing up black in post-Apartheid South Africa - but it's so relevant to other countries, too.

Liz Book dedications are in of the first things I look for when perusing books at the store or library. 👌 9y
thelittlestbiblio I find them fascinating as well 💕 Book dedications can tell you a lot about the author and the book you're about to read. 9y
