Sisters of Treason
Sisters of Treason: A Novel | Elizabeth Fremantle

From the author People called a must-read for Philippa Gregory fans, a terrifically entertaining (The Sunday Times, London) novel about two sisters who must survive life in the Tudor court after the execution of their sister Lady Jane Grey who was queen for just nine days. Early in Mary Tudors turbulent reign, Lady Catherine and Lady Mary Grey are reeling after the brutal death of their elder seventeen-year-old sister, and the succession is by no means stable. In Sisters of Treason, Elizabeth Fremantle brings these young women and their perilous times to vivid life. Neither sister is well suited to a dangerous career at court. Flirtatious Lady Catherine, thought to be the true heir, cannot control her compulsion to love and be loved. Her sister, clever Lady Mary, has a crooked spine and a tiny stature in an age when physical perfection equates to goodnessand both girls have inherited the Tudor blood that is more curse than blessing. For either girl to marry without royal permission would be a potentially fatal political act. It is the royal portrait painter, Levina Teerlinc, who helps the girls survive these troubled times. She becomes their mentor and confidante, but when the Queens sister, the hot-headed Elizabeth Tudor, inherits the crown, life at court becomes increasingly treacherous for the surviving Grey sisters. Ultimately each young woman must decide how far she will go to defy her Queen, risk her life, and find the safety and love she longs for. An enthralling story of love and tyranny, Sisters of Treason brings the Tudor Courts to life again, in all their romance and horror (Leanda de Lisle).

Book #24 of 2021! I‘m loving Fremantle‘s writing style and her vision for bringing lesser known Tudor characters to life!

Lady Jane Grey is a great tragedy of its time, takes place just after Lady Jane‘s beheading, follows her sisters as through court life after the fall of their family. I liked how it started out, it was interesting, but than it dragged in the middle, and the ending was rushed. The author did a good job giving the reader a real sense of that period of time and how people behaved, I just thought it took a long time to get to the heart of the story.

Sister of Treason by Elizabeth Fremantle: the book is set at the Tudor Court and the focus is Katherine, and Mary Grey, after their oldest sister, Lady Jane Grey had been executed by Queen Mary Tudor. I find the Tudors endlessly fascinating, and I enjoy reading Fremantle's book. But, I found this one a little boring. It was a good story, with interesting characters from our Royal History, just not one of her better novels.

#lyricalapril #royals After thoroughly enjoying her novel The Girl in the Glass Tower, I'm now reading all of Elizabeth Fremantle's historical novels on English royaltyx These two deal with Jane, Katherine and Mary Grey, and Katherine Parr. (Plus tiara, to complement the theme! 😄 👸🏻)
