The Marshmallow Test
The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control | Walter Mischel
11 posts | 8 read | 4 reading | 14 to read
Renowned psychologist Walter Mischel, designer of the famous Marshmallow Test, explains what self-control is and how to master it. A child is presented with a marshmallow and given a choice: Eat this one now, or wait and enjoy two later. What will she do? And what are the implications for her behavior later in life? The world's leading expert on self-control, Walter Mischel has proven that the ability to delay gratification is critical for a successful life, predicting higher SAT scores, better social and cognitive functioning, a healthier lifestyle and a greater sense of self-worth. But is willpower prewired, or can it be taught? In The Marshmallow Test, Mischel explains how self-control can be mastered and applied to challenges in everyday life--from weight control to quitting smoking, overcoming heartbreak, making major decisions, and planning for retirement. With profound implications for the choices we make in parenting, education, public policy and self-care, The Marshmallow Test will change the way you think about who we are and what we can be.

I'm reading from a personal and teaching motivation. This read has some key take away concepts that makes one reflect on how to improve self-control. There are many practical ideas to employ and are reasoned with scientific rational that anyone can access.

I really enjoyed this more than I was expecting to. Partly because I‘ll listen to anything Alan Alda reads to me (note to self: rewatch MASH), but also because I thought it had just the right mix of science, personal anecdote and advice that made it feel more substantial than a self help book. Really interesting

This has been sitting on my audible for ages and I‘m trying to work through my tbr on a mini two week book buying ban. I can‘t honestly remember exactly why I bought it and im not ~mega~ excited about it but hoping it‘ll be interesting.

MelissaSue81 Curious to know what the premise is? I‘m familiar with what the marshmallow test is, but what are they trying to claim with the results? 6y
Reviewsbylola I really should read this. 😆 6y
Emilymdxn @MelissaSue81 it‘s not taking a particular angle really just explaining how complex the issue of self control is 6y

A solid, research-backed book of human psychology, this starts with the exploration of how self-control in childhood translates to success in adulthood. However, it also explores coping mechanisms in life situations and how to work with and change how we respond, i.e. this is not hard wired. Some will find this too technical, but if you enjoy psychology, I strongly recommend it.

DGRachel I'm the kid that licks the table around the marshmallow before finally succumbing to the pressure and eating it. *sigh* 7y
Zelma @DGRachel this certainly gave me a funny mental picture! 7y

Scary (interesting?) idea. Environment influencing genetics influencing environment. Does it explain aspects of our now?

The marshmallow test was mentioned in my last book (Perfect Little World) and I just happened to have this, so I thought I'd read it next. It's about the outcome of a study started in the 60s about self control in preschool and thereafter and it's relationship to success in life. Sounds interesting! Maybe knowledge of how to improve self control will help me get through Infinite Jest! 😂

Reviewsbylola So cool that you had that to link from PLW. There is no way my kids wouldn't just eat the marshmallow. 😂 8y
DGRachel I love the marshmallow test. I'm totally the kid that would lick around the table. 😂😂😂😳 8y
