Untouchable
Untouchable | Mulk Raj Anand
The powerful story of an Untouchable in India s caste system, now with a new introduction With precision, vitality, and a fury that earned him praise as India s Charles Dickens, Mulk Raj Anand recreates in"Untouchable"what it was like to live on the fringes of society in pre-independence India. Bakha, an attractive, proud, and strong young man, is also an Untouchable, the lowest of the low in India s caste system. A sweeper and a toilet-cleaner, he must warn others on the street of his status so that he will not pollute them with his presence. In this urgent 1935 re-creation of one day in the life of an outcast, a violent encounter leads Bakha to question his fate and to find an answer in the unlikeliest of places. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Untouchable is a fact fiction work which is a must read if you want to understand the vicious impact of the caste system in India, during the 1900s. Brilliant writing which is both an interesting and educational read. My full review is on my blog www.anushareflects.com

Academic read.
It presents the real pre-independent society of India. It's just like the story of the old India I'd heard from my great grandpa. It's a serious stuff. Really serious stuff.
And a must-read too.

‘He could not overstep the barriers which the conventions of his superiors had built up to protect their weakness against him. He could not invade the magic circle which protects a priest from attack by anybody, especially by a low-caste man. So in the highest moment of his strength, the slave in him asserted itself, and he lapsed back, wild with torture, biting his lips, ruminating his grievances‘
