The Sound of One Hand Clapping
The Sound of One Hand Clapping | Richard Flanagan
4 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
NOW AVAILABLE AS A VINTAGE CLASSIC EDITION Since its first publication in 1997, Richard Flanagan's classic story of migration and love has become one of the most-loved and biggest-selling literary novels in Australian history. In the winter of 1954, in a construction camp in the remote Tasmanian highlands, when Sonja Buloh was three years old and her father was drinking too much, Sonja's mother walked into a blizzard never to return. Some thirty-five years later, when Sonja visits Tasmania and her drunkard father, the shadows of the past begin to intrude ever more forcefully into the present - changing forever his living death and her ordered life... THE SOUND OF ONE HAND CLAPPING is about the underbelly of Australia, the barbarism of Europe, and the destiny of those in the country beyond hope who seek to redeem themselves through love. 'Heart-wrenching and beautifully written... A rare and remarkable achievement' -- LOS ANGELES TIME

The story of the emigrant workers in Tasmania is of course devastating, presented very vividly and is intertwined with some other ideas. In the foreground is relationship between father and daughter, burdened with the past. The author with sensitively explores the issue and the importance of the language and skills of expression, but unfortunately, all the good sides of this book are dimmed with at the times exaggerated, almost pathetic prose. 👇

Simona I had read the book in Slovenian translation, but unfortunately, I don't have the feeling that there is a problem in translation.

My next book is about Slovenian emigrants in Australia - Tasmania. From where I live, this is #farflung

#maybookflowers

vivastory I'm curious, what is the common perception in Slovenia of Melania Trump? 8y
Simona @vivastory Opinions are divided, some are proud, because someone from Slovenia is in the White House, some people don't see the reason to be proud of ... most excited about her, however, are of course in the media. 8y
vivastory @simona my favorite videos recently are the clips pf her swatting away Trump's hand when he tries to hold her hand 😂 8y
Simona Yeah, looks like happy marriage... 8y

Struggled through this. Love the writing style, but the story didn't really grip me. Had to kind of make myself pick it up again and again.
