*A 2014 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST* It's 1964, and Sunny's town is being invaded. Or at least that's what the adults of Greenwood, Mississippi, are saying. All Sunny knows is that people from up north are coming to help people register to vote. They're calling it Freedom Summer. Meanwhile, Sunny can't help but feel like her house is being invaded, too. She has a new stepmother, a new brother, and a new sister crowding her life, giving her little room to breathe. And things get even trickier when Sunny and her brother are caught sneaking into the local swimming pool -- where they bump into a mystery boy whose life is going to become tangled up in theirs. As she did in her groundbreaking documentary novel COUNTDOWN, award-winning author Deborah Wiles uses stories and images to tell the riveting story of a certain time and place -- and of kids who, in a world where everyone is choosing sides, must figure out how to stand up for themselves and fight for what's right.

This HF is interspersed with actual people and events of the mid 1960s when young men and women came to the American South as Freedom Fighters. Their goal was to educate African Americans about using their voting rights. Turned out to be deadly for many😓 #freedomfighters #fallfinds @Eggs

Sequel to Countdown—these were my teen years. Mostly about the struggle for integration in the South. Freedom Schools were set up by volunteers in southern states, which encouraged all races of citizens to push for voting rights. Being an ebook, there were plenty of photos & illustrations that made it a vivid experience. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks Sorry Sarah-will be blowing up your feed w. reviews to catch up 🤪

I have now read all 3 in this 60s trilogy and I cannot tell you how good each one of them is. This one is set in 1964 in Mississippi when young people from all over came to the south to set up voter registration. Unbelievable what we are not taught in school about this time! These books need to be read!

It has taken me four years to finish this book, but it was so, so good. I love the way the author weaves the historical elements in with the fictional story. Ready for the third in the trilogy, about Vietnam. I‘m sure it will be published someday!

This is a relatively engaging Civil Rights novel. The format, like the first book in the series is original- but not executed so well in this one. There are some complex characters which are well crafted. Ultimately this novel suffers from poor pacing. The last 100 pages are well done, but the first 400 could have been condensed by half.
