Don't Sleep, There are Snakes
Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle | Daniel Everett
8 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Although Daniel Everett was a missionary, far from converting the Pirahs, they converted him. He shows the slow, meticulous steps by which he gradually mastered their language and his gradual realisation that its unusual nature closely reflected its speakers' startlingly original perceptions of the world. He describes how he began to realise that his discoveries about the Pirah language opened up a new way of understanding how language works in our minds and in our lives, and that this way was utterly at odds with Noam Chomsky's universally accepted linguistic theories. The perils of passionate academic opposition were then swiftly conjoined to those of the Amazon in a debate whose outcome has yet to be won. Adventure, personal enlightenment and the makings of a scientific revolution proceed together in this vivid, funny and moving book.

Well, at almost 50% I‘m tapping out. I can‘t get the 5 hours of my listening life back but I *can* (and did) return this to the library and move on. Here‘s the thing I learned: the author is a skilled linguist and a really, really terrible narrator in equal measure.

This might be a fantastic book in print but it is downright painful to listen to. Later, alligator. 👋

Mehso-so

Read this for a class called Language, Thought, and Culture. The Pirahã are the ultimate minimalists and their language reflects that. Not a bad read for an assignment.

Getting some assigned reading in after class. Good thing about assigned reading is that it forces you to read things you wouldn't have otherwise. Really enjoying this man's account of his time with the Pirahãs of the Amazon. They are the ultimate minimalists.

Pickpick

This book was such an eye opener and a curiosity scratcher! It is amazing to learn how people view the world in a different language and how a people can change the life of the author. One of the best books I have read.
