Don't Sleep, There are Snakes
Don't Sleep, There are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle | Daniel L. Everett
8 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
A linguist offers a thought-provoking account of his experiences and discoveries while living with the Piraha, a small tribe of Amazonian Indians living in central Brazil and a people possessing a language that defies accepted linguistic theories and reflects a culture that has no counting system, concept of war, or personal property, and lives entirely in the present.

Well, at almost 50% I‘m tapping out. I can‘t get the 5 hours of my listening life back but I *can* (and did) return this to the library and move on. Here‘s the thing I learned: the author is a skilled linguist and a really, really terrible narrator in equal measure.

This might be a fantastic book in print but it is downright painful to listen to. Later, alligator. 👋

Mehso-so

Read this for a class called Language, Thought, and Culture. The Pirahã are the ultimate minimalists and their language reflects that. Not a bad read for an assignment.

Getting some assigned reading in after class. Good thing about assigned reading is that it forces you to read things you wouldn't have otherwise. Really enjoying this man's account of his time with the Pirahãs of the Amazon. They are the ultimate minimalists.

Pickpick

This book was such an eye opener and a curiosity scratcher! It is amazing to learn how people view the world in a different language and how a people can change the life of the author. One of the best books I have read.
