Q: A Novel
Q: A Novel | Evan Mandery

Q, Quentina Elizabeth Deveril, is the love of my life. Shortly before his wedding, the unnamed hero of this uncommon romance is visited by a man who claims to be his future self and ominously admonishes him that he must not marry the love of his life, Q. At first the protagonist doubts this stranger, but in time he becomes convinced of the authenticity of the warning and leaves his fiance. The resulting void in his life is impossible to fill. One after the other, future selves arrive urging him to marry someone else, divorce, attend law school, leave law school, travel, join a running club, stop running, study the guitar, the cello, Proust, Buddhism, and opera, and eliminate gluten from his diet. The only constants in this madcap quest for personal improvement are his love for his New York City home and for the irresistible Q. A unique literary talent, Evan Mandery turns the classic story of transcendent love on its head, with an ending that will melt even the darkest heart.

#2022Book48
I had a very specific way I wanted this book to end, and fortunately it ended perfectly. I liked the main character and his interactions with the future versions of himself. But the “stories” within the story felt kind of unnecessary and didn‘t add anything to the overall plot.

“Give up on trying to be original. Every song has been sung, every picture has been painted, and every story has been told. The best one can do is sing, draw, or tell it again well.”

There was really only one choice for #startswithQ

This sweet goofy little hipster time travel love story is about E and Q who are head over heels for each other... until an older E arrives from the future and tells him he must not marry her.

It's a nice book but maybe wears out its welcome a bit. After following his future self's advice, E meets a parade of his future selves warning him away from every major life decision. #MayBookFlowers

ItsAnotherJen Sounds rather disheartening...🤔 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @JenFowler It is, a bit, but the ending course corrects. 8y
Zelma I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. Loved the concept, but not the execution as much. 8y

E loves Q and they are a blissfully happy hipster couple... until E is visited by himself from the future and is informed that they must split up. The romance in this book is silly, from first date mini-golf to tiny protest marches, but it is also genuine and sweet. #17booklove @jess.how #romanticlove

Dr. Sigmund Freud, the world's expert on evolution, has had his last public appearance in a debate on the evolutionary progress.
That is, in the historical fiction novel in the science fiction novel Q. The unnamed main character is obsessed with changing the past, so it only makes sense that his future self tries to change his present.
