The Strange Death of Fiona Griffiths
The Strange Death of Fiona Griffiths | Harry Bingham
12 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
British author, Harry Bingham, blew critics and readers away with his crime debut, Talking to the Dead. His second novel, Love Story, with Murders, established DC Fiona Griffiths as the most compelling heroine in crime fiction. With this, the third novel in the series, comes Fiona's darkest, strangest and most challenging assignment yet . . . It started out as nothing much. A minor payroll fraud at a furniture store in South Wales. No homicide involved, no corpses. Detective Constable Fiona Griffiths fights to get free of the case, but loses. She's tasked with the investigation. She begins her enquiries, only to discover the corpse of a woman who's starved to death. Looks further, and soon realizes that within the first, smaller crime, a vaster one looms: the most audacious theft in history. Fionas bosses need a copper willing to go undercover, and they ask Fiona to play the role of a timid payroll clerk so that she can penetrate the criminal gang from within. Fiona will be alone, shell be lethally vulnerable and her fragile grip on Planet Normal will be tested as never before . . . INTERNATIONAL CRITICS LOVE THIS SERIES Gritty, compelling . . . a procedural unlike any other you are likely to read this year.USA Today With Detective Constable Fiona Fi Griffiths, Harry Bingham . . . finds a sweet spot in crime fiction . . . think Stieg Larssons Lisbeth Salander . . . Denise Minas Paddy Meehan [or] Lee Childs Jack Reacher. . . . The writing is terrific.Boston Globe A stunner with precision plotting, an unusual setting, and a deeply complex protagonist . . . We have the welcome promise of more books to come about Griffiths. The Seattle Times A most intriguing, if peculiar, detective . . . Although his volatile protagonist certainly dominates the first-person narrative, [Harry] Bingham doesnt stint on plot (very complicated), procedures (very detailed) or action (very brutal). . . . Satisfying.Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review A dark delight, and I look forward to Fionas future struggles with criminals, her demons and the mysteries of her past.Washington Post "[The Strange Death of Fiona Griffiths] confronts the reader with profound questions about human nature in the midst of a fast-paced plot."The Sunday Times (London) Recommended highly . . . [a] riveting procedural thriller.Library Journal (starred review) An even more intense plot and richer character study than his first. . . . Fionas past mental problems and her unconventional personality make her a distinctive lead.Publishers Weekly (starred review) Some of the most memorably staccato narration in the genre . . . [Binghams] remote, unquenchable heroine makes her stand apart from every one of her procedural brothers and sisters.Kirkus Reviews Compelling . . . amply proves the freshness and flair that [Bingham] has brought to the police procedural. . . . Surprisingly delicate, it weaves a sinuous, seductive spell and confirms we have a new crime talent to treasure."Daily Mail (London)

This is third book in the Fiona Griffiths series and possibly the best so far. Fiona, a detective constable in Wales, is assigned a small payroll fraud case, but soon uncovers murder and a larger plan afoot. She goes undercover as a payroll clerk, risking her life and her sanity. I love Fiona. My library only had the first two books in the series so I‘m now purchasing the rest on my Kindle. #Bookspin for April

mom2bugnbee Our TV show is the same. The series 4 finale is the best 90 mins of TV I've ever watched. BC & MF are simply brilliant throughout. 6y
Sharpeipup @mom2bugnbee Agreed! I watched it at the gym...on the elliptical...and there was some yelling at the TV... 6y
mom2bugnbee @sharpeipup I called the twist about the dog... And I NEVER get twists like that. I may have run around my living room, arms raised in victory. ✌️ 6y

Third book in the series. Fiona is a unique character and her personal quirks are really put to good use in an undercover assignment to break a massive fraud ring. Ongoing plots are also moved forward. Maybe the best in this series yet.

Another great read in this series. Really like the MC Fiona, though she has quite a sad personal end to this particular book. Looking forward to see what happens in book 4. Been buying these in second hand hardback and can‘t find the next one in hardback at all!! This Thing of Darkness....so if anyone has any hidden sites I may not have tried let me know.

Fiona lets going undercover get to her, like really, really get to her. I agree that if you can't get at the big fish then what have you accomplished?

If there was a rating beyond Pick, I would be using it. My favourite book in the series so far. It grapples with, among other things, the sense of self and how fragile it can be. A must-read.

jenniferw88 His next one came out today! 😉 I now have to decide whether to continue collecting the paperbacks (I'm running out of shelf space) or cave in and buy the Kindle version for 99p! 😂 7y

Think pink and DON'T BLINK! 😱

Also amused that the library forgot to remove the Chapters price sticker before laminating the cover 😁

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Ha! Don't blink indeed. 8y
rabbitprincess @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I may actually have to cover this one in paper before reading it 😟 8y

I've just started the fifth in this series by Harry Bingham, entitled The Dead House. Fiona Griffiths is a great protagonist, complex yet ultimately likeable. Best to start at the start of the series with this one; Fiona's family and past play an integral part as the series develops.
