Third in the Aubrey-Maturin series - I loved it. Jack finally gets a command and is commissioned to sail to the Malay Peninsula, first stopping in India. There‘s espionage, romance, bromance, a naval battle, a duel at dawn, tragic death, sudden squalls, the literal doldrums…just fantastic.

The Aubrey/Maturin novels are not long, but they read slow for me. Maybe it is because they were written in the early 70s (at the start of the series), or maybe the author is trying to convey the slowness of life at sea between the period moments of action. Despite all that, I like the novels.

Some balls are
Held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're
Held for pleasure
They're the balls that I love best

Book 2️⃣ of the #12booksof2020

I‘ve gotten a slow start on the Aubrey-Maturin series over the past few years, but I have a feeling my progress will pick up beginning in 2021, after reading this terrific third entry in the series this year. This book is packed with nineteenth century nautical thrills and adventures, and populated by characters who feel true to their time while remaining likeable.

MsMelissa I 💕 this series. 4y
Andrew65 I need to get back to these. Well done 👏👏👏 4y

I only finished one of my #tbrbingo books in October, though I read several books that aren‘t on it, and HMS Surprise was excellent. Every time I return to the Aubrey-Maturin series I wonder why I‘ve been away so long. I‘ve also been reading Little, Big since October 2. It‘s a slow burn and several unrenewable library books have taken precedence.

I‘m now reading this third book in Patrick O”brien‘s collection of tales on the high sea. His lyricism is excellent. I am really enjoying this book. Already looking forward to the next one!

1. O‘Brian‘s Aubrey/Maturin novels! (I am in the minority of ppl who don‘t care about Harry Potter btw)
2. Don‘t have a TV. I guess maybe Babylon 5?
3. Hard nope.
4. 3-mimosa brunch!
5. Yes. He‘s a slow reader because he underlines & highlights & writes a ton of marginalia. I‘m glad he‘s so engaged by books, but I hate to read one after him because they‘re so marked up.

If you like solid history and a rousing story, this is for you. Hornblower redone with better history and amusing writing. Read one and you will want them all.
