King of the Night At the very edge of Dimwood Forest stood an old charred oak where, silhouetted by the moon, a great horned owl sat waiting. The owl s name was Mr. Ocax, and he looked like death himself. With his piercing gaze, he surveyed the lands he called his own, watching for the creatures he considered his subjects. Not one of them ever dared to cross his path. . .until the terrible night when two little mice went dancing in the moonlight. . .

“Dude, I'm not going to spend my life asking an old owl's okay every time I want to have fun. Know what I'm saying? This is our moment, girl, right? And now that I've dug this nut up, I'm going to enjoy it. Besides, he said, it's too dark for an old owl to see me.“
He definitely spoke too soon.

I thought it was kind of wild how Poppy's “boyfriend“, Ragweed, got killed in the first chapter by Mr. Ocax because he was being too careless. He went out in the open on Bannock Hill without asking the owls for permission. It is very ironic that Ragweed was bragging about his “free-as-a-bird life“ when he got snatched. Poppy's nose got injured and she fainted from the fight.

This book is about Poppy, a deer mouse, who is very brave and defies Mr. Ocax, a great-horned owl. From the first chapter and the synopsis on the back of the book, I feel like this book is filled with a lot of action, adventure, and suspense.

I don‘t think I‘d be interested in reading this book just because it didn‘t grab my attention enough. I really like though that they incorporate some illustrations because I feel like when you‘re learning to read bigger chapter books, it can be overwhelming.

There is Mr. Ocax which everyone seems to be afraid of. Poppy would rather be dancing in the moonlight but instead he has to fend himself against Mr. Ocax. Poppy later realizes that there is no bully wore than a bully whose bluff is called.

This book would be great for children/students interested in stories and tales written from an animal‘s perspective. The animals plight with one another is also interesting and incorporates knowledge of different animals and their characteristics and traits.

This book is about Mr. Ocax the owl who has declared himself king of Dimwood Forest. He protects the porcupines and mice in the forest. The forest animals lived in the Gray house that once belonged to a farmer. The mouse family asks Mr Ocax for permission to dance on the hill outside, he denies their request. Poppy then goes face to face with a porcupine.

Poppy learns there is no bully worse than a bully whose bluff is called.. I wonder how that plays out in the story between poppy and the porcupine he has to face

This book seems a little suspenseful after reading the little summary on the inside. It says many small, tiny animals try their hardest to defend themselves from Mr.Ocax (the great horned owl). I wonder how they will do so?

1. Professor McGonagall ? Also thinking of Maggie Smith in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. "Try to do as I say, and not as I do."
2. Avi's Poppy ? A great book I chose for school reading. I'm looking to eventually seek out and read the full series.
3. Catch 22, read on my own discovering.
4. The gift of good times with the theatre folks of Georgina Pioneer Village, many as retired school teachers. ?‍?

Last weekend was my Oregon Battle of the Books Regional tournament. We had about 500 people and it was so fun! I‘m happy to report that all the adults behaved, and the kids were awesome.

The top team was a group of kids who had come to all of my OBOB prep programs at the library, so that made me extra happy. I‘m handing the Regional Manager job on to someone else next year, so it felt like a great way to end.

LibrarianRyan I was only asked to volunteer once. But I wouldn't let the teams make negative comments to each other. One team kept calling another team dumb and I wasn't having it. The kid that wouldn't stop I made leave the room for that round. Parents complained and I wasn't asked back. 🙁 I'm sorry but the smart kids ragging on the other kids are just as bad as jocks ragging on the weaklings. Not in my room, or my library. 7y
LibrarianRyan I'm glad yours was great. I loved battle of the books when I was a child. 7y
LiteraryinPA I‘ve never heard of the concept of a Battle of the Books tournament. I have to do some research! Congrats on yours going well! 7y

BookInMyHands @LibrarianRyan That wouldn‘t fly with me either! At OBOB we put a lot of emphasis on good sportsmanship. It‘s in our rules, and in our training for volunteers too. Bullying is never okay. The problems I‘ve had are with parents. But that‘s just been at the state competition. My Regionals have always gone really well! 7y

I was #audiocleaning and finished this one today. I‘m not a big fan of animal stories, but this was fun.

Poppy‘s mouse family lives under the oppressive rule of the wise owl, their supposed “protector.” When Poppy hears that her actions have put her entire family in danger she questions what she‘s been told and sets off on an adventure to find answers.

she_barks When my son was in 2nd grade, we got to hear Avi speak and my son got his copy of this book autographed. It was memorable. He's an interesting guy. 7y

I think we may enjoy this as much as we have enjoyed Redwall despite it seeming a lot lighter than that thick series of epic battles. Only a couple of chapters in and already there's plenty of both character building and excitement without seeming forced.

Review based on my son's experience of the book. A bit too dark for my four year old. The deaths of multiple characters in the book made him quite upset. Lighter fare next time. But for an older child a lot of beautiful imagery and fun characters. Torn between a so so and a pick.
